Description
C. H. NOWACK.
CONTAINER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 21, I917.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLEShI-I. NOWACK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COM- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CONTAINER.
Application filed December 21, 1917.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NoWnoK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to containers and has more particular reference to containers of the character used ordinarily for the packaging of shoe polish and the like, although it will be manifest as the invention is better understood that it may be embodied in containers designed for a wide variety of uses.
A principal object of the invention is the provision of a hermetically closed friction top container, which can be opened readily with the hand and without the necessity of using any pry-off tools or implements.
further object of the invention is the provision of such a container which will require no opening devices, consisting merely of a one-part body and a one-part c ver.
A still further object of the invention is the provision'of a container of pleasing appearance and economical manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is section taken through a container embodying my present invention;
Fig. is an enlarged detail showing the action of the hand in removing the cover; and
Figs. l and 5 are perspective views showing the cover and body separated from each other.
For the puroose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied in a flat, circular container comprising a body 1 and a cover 2. The body 1 is of the usual cylindrieal form and is provided at its top with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ode. 5, 1920.
Serial No. 208,311.
a curled wire edge 3. The cover consists merely of a top or flat part f and a cylindrical flange 6. This flange 6 is offset above its bottom edge at 9 to engage the bead 3 and the lower part 8 of the flange extends straight down below the head. The box is closed by merely pushing the cover tightly about the edge and the parts are so constructed that the closure is an hermetic one. The box is opened by merely g 'asping it as shown in the drawing and pressing in on two opposite sides of the cover. The en gaged portions of the top and cover are of different flexibility with greater flexibility in the cover. The pressure of the fingers produces a slight deformation and the cover springs off. Indeed the box may be opened if sufficient pressure is exerted at a single point in the depending part 8 of the cover flange.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. The combination of a container body having its top edge formed in an outwardly turned curl, and a cover therefor formed with a shoulder adapted to rest on the top of said curl when the container is closed, the edge of the cover being formed in a vertical flange which depends from the outer part of said shoulder and engages tightly around the outer side of said curl and extends below the bottom of said curl, said cover being disengageable from the body by pressing inwardly against said depending cover flange at a point below said curl of the body.
2. The combination of a container body having its top edge formed in an outwardly turned curl, and a cover therefor formed with a shoulder adapted to rest on the top of said curl when the container is closed, the
described being 'edge of the cover being formed in a vertical middle of the container will spring the cover flange Which depends from the outer part from the body. 10 of said shoulder and engages tightly around Signed in the presence of two subscribing the outer side of said curl and extends be- Witnesses.
510w the bottom of said curl, the depending CHARLES H. NOWVACK.
flange and body curl being of such relative Witnesses: flexibility and stiffness that pressure on the V J. C. CARPENTER,
flange in an inward direction toward the iM. E. BARRY.
