Description

E. HOFFMAN.
CONTAINER FOR TALCUM POWDER- APPLICATION FILED APR. 15. I915.
Patented Dec. 25, 1917.
1,251,028. fl j UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND HOFFMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COM- PANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CONTAINER FOR TALCUM POWDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 25, 191 '7,
Application filed April 15, 1915. Serial No. 21,529.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containers for Talcum Powder, of which the following is a specipowder but which will also carry and protect a powder puff, chamois or other article to be used in applying the powder.
A11 additional object of the invention is the provision of such a container in which the powderpufl, chamois or the like will not be in contact with the powder when the container is closed, thereby preventing the absorption of a too great charge of powder by the puif or chamois due to the shaking and jostling of the bag or other receptacle in which the package is carried.
A further object of the invention is the provision of such a container which will be of pleasing appearance, of easy use and of strong and durable construction.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a container embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail section showing more clearly the arrangement of the parts in the assembled structure; and
Fig. 4 is a view showing the arrangement of the powder and puff or chamois in the container. 1
The container shown on the drawing and embodying my invention consists primarily of a body A forming the body of the receptacle, a cover B therefor forming an upper receptacle, and a lid or cover C for the receptacle formed in the cover B. The
body of the receptacle, in the present instance, is of the relativelyshallow, cylin drical form and is provided beneath its upper edge with an outwardly extending bead 5, the upper edge being turned in slightly at 6. The cover B consists of a single sheet of metal having a large central depressidn'W and a long downwardly extending flange 8 adapted to embrace the upper edge of the body and to rest against the bead 5 which limits the telescoping movement of these parts. The length of the flange 7 is preferably such that the bottom 8 of the upper receptacle is disposed at or adjacent the extremity 6 of the body wall. The flange 7 is also provided with an encircling head 9 against which the slip flange 10 of the upper cover or lid C may engage. The two covers B and C are therefore slip covers, the,one B fitting over the top of the body and the other C over the flange 7 of the cover B. If desired the cover C may be domed, as indicated at 11, to increase the capacity of the receptacle 7 for the containing of a relatively large powder pufl'.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be under stood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the 1nvent1on or sacrificing any of its materlal advantages,
- the form hereinbefore described being merely tacle forms a cover for the body, and the upper portion of said flange being embraced by the flange of the cover; the body being provided with an outwardly extending bead with which engages the bottom edge of the flange of said receptacle, and the flange of the receptacle being provided with an outwardly extending head with which engages the bottom edge of the slip flange of the cover.
2. In a sheet metal powder box, in combination: a body, a cover, and an intermediate receptacle for a powder pufl, said receptacle having a downwardly dished bottom surrounded by a depending flange which embraces the body by a slip joint, and said cover having a slip-flange which embraces the upper part of the depending flange of the receptacle.
3. In a sheet metal powder box, in combination: a body, a cover, and an intermediate receptacle for a powder puff, said receptacle having a downwardly dished bottom surrounded by a depending flange which embraces the body by a slip joint, said cover having a slip-flange which embraces the upper part of the depending flange of the receptacle, and the upper part oi said depending flange being inset from its lower part and the upper part of the body being inset from its lower part, so that the lower part of the body and the flange of the receptacle and the flange of the cover are substantially in line with each other.
Signed in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND HOFFMAN.
