Description

M. MOIR.
BED.
APPLICATION F JAN 1,350,327. I Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
u Invent/ 02 @mMWe fliiornegn I UNITED STATES .PArE-NrjoFFi-ca mnm. mom, or sex FRANCISCO, camromua I BED.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,'MABEI. Mo1n, a citizen p of Great Britain, residing at the cit of San'- Francisco, in the county of San ran-v cisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wall-beds.
The object of my invention is to provide a wall-bed 'n two separable sections, each of said sections comprising a 'complete bed, but said section's beingso joined that they may readily be 'united to form adoublebed, or separated so as to form so-called twin-beds.
Wall-beds are used mostly in apartment houses to obtain space for other furniture and to remove the appearance of a bedroom and also to obviate the desirability of careful bed-making for the sake of appearance.
While differing in design or mechanism for the raising, lowering and swinging or handling the same they have heretofore constituted double-beds only as intended forthe use of a plurality of persons under the same coverings. Apartments are mostly oocupied by two persons, husband and wife, and the sleepm of two persons under the same 'covering s is not conducive to good health or comfort, but
on the contrary may be harmful.
To overcome such objections to theuse of wall-beds, I have invented twin wallbeds to take the place of the present double wall-beds, retaining the good features of the latter, with novel connections be-.
tween the .two beds so as to provide aneconomical, unobjectionable and effective means for the sle'epmgof two persons under different coverings.
Although I'have shown in the accompany ing drawlng the preferable construction of which may fall within its spirit andscope.
males or females, or,
,.which frame is inged to a invent on, I claim all modifications Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug 24, 1920 Application filed January 2, 1911. Serial No. 140,262.
' beds when'the same are united foruse as.
a double-bed.
In the drawing A shows one of the wallbeds embodyih my invention movably connectedto a vwal or stanchion and B shows a view of said beds not connected to the wall. In bed or section A, 1 designates a slideway; and in bed or section B, 2 is a rod slidable in said slideway. The rod 2 is provided .at its free end with-a knob for preventing the withdrawal'of the rod from the slideway. The invention is preferably arranged with two rods and slideways as mentioned, one of said rods and one of said slideways in which the rod works being positioned at each endof the beds, but the rods and slide.
ways may be arranged otherwise without departing from the'spirit of my invention. By the arrangement of the beds as shown longitudinal movement of the same from each other is prevented, while transversely the beds may be moved so as to constitute twin-beds or a double-bed as desired. l
In Fig. 1 my invention is shown separated for use as a twin bed and for different coverings, and in1Fig. 2 the same is shown. with the sections thereof united so that the same may be used as a doublebed and with the. same coverings. The slideways are provided with in-turned flanges so that the rods 2 are prevented from removal from section A.-
The head of bed A is hung in a frame by means of stra s as shown in Fig. 1 and post or fixed support.
claim In combination with a'fixed support, a frame centrally hinged to said fixed support and sustained thereby, a pair of beds in alinement, the head of one of said beds being hung within said frame and provided with a slidewa extending transversely therein and the cot of said bed being rovided with a slideway at its base exten ing transversely therein, the openings of said slideways being narrower than the inner portion thereof, and the other ofsaid beds being provided with a rod extending transd versely therefrom at the head of said bed and slidable in the slideway in the front portion of the bed connected to said frame, In testimon whereof I afiix my signature and the foot of said bed provided with said in presence 0 two Witnesses.
rod being provided with a rod slidable in I the slideway in the rear portion of the bed a MABEL MOIR. connected to said frame, and each of said 1 rods being provided with a head in the "Witnesses:
slideway in which it is slidable of greater H. ACKERMAN,
diameter than the opening of said slidewayi Ron D. F ISH.
