Description
waited tatw FREDERICK MENZER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 101,489, dated April 5, 1870.
IMPROVED EXTENSION BED.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK Mnxznn, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Extension Bed with Drawers; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention and improvements without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invent-ion is to construct an improved extension bed, which shail be more especially useful as a bed for growing children, and where space is limited; and
It consists in making the bed with two sets of side rails, one set being attached to the head-board and the other set to the foot-board, and combining with this construction slats or supporters for the mattress,
placed lengthwise and hinged together, at a point which enables a portion to stand perpendicular-ly g against the head-board when the bed 'is closed up.
Themattress is also jointed, and, when the bed is closed up, may serve for a bolster', or it may stand entirely ont of the way like the bottom.
Drawers are arranged at both head and foot of the bed, so as to close beneath it and out of sight.
Referring to the accompanying drawings- A is the head-board, and B the bot-board of abcd. These may be plain or carved, as desired.
From the head-board the upper and lower side rails C and D extend as far as the shortest length intended for the bed, and are slotted, as shown at et et.
The rails E and F are attached to the foot-board and slide on the others, the upper rail E being tongued, so as to tit a corresponding groove in the rail C, while the rail F slides similarly within the rail D, as shown.
The rails C and D are united by bars b b, and the rails E and vF by bars e c, so that they are steadied and caused to move together.
vThe hot-tom G is made of the salue lengt-h as the rails O and D, and supports the extension-slats H. One end'of the slats is fastened to the foot-board, and by'its motion they are drawn out or closed. The other ends are jointed or hinged to this tirst part at d, so that, when the bed is to be shortened or closed, this head port-ion will sta-nd at an incline or vertically within the recess f made in the head-board for the purpose.
In order to aid this portion iu taking its position, an inclined strip, is placed so as to guide it, and, it' the bed is only partially closed, this strip supports the head-slats and the mattress so as to form a bolster.
The mattress J is also jointed like the slats, and subjected to a similar motion and disposal when the bed is closed.
Beneath thebottom G are drawers K and L, which, when closed, are entirely concealed, and which serve to contain bedding and articles of clothing. The end of the drawer L forms a part of the foot-board, and operates with it.
By this construction I am ena-bled to produce a bed which will be suitable for a child, and can be extended when necessary. It is also very convenient when the room is small, as it can be closed during the day and extended at night.
Having thus described my invention.
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination with the double side rails C D and E F, the adj nstable slats H, arranged to be employed as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
FREDRK. MENZER. [rh su] Witnesses:
GEO. H. STRONG, W. R. BooNn.
