loolvnslmn BEDSTEAD, TABLE, sw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,189, dated June 6, 1882.
Application tiled January-14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY A. McMAs'rER, a citizen of the United States, resident at Antioch, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bedsteads, Tables, Src.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the, art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a representation of my invention in the form of a bed. Fig. 2 is the same in the form of a table. Fig. 3 is a side view of two sections of rail. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 5 is avertical section of one of the corner legs. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are detail views of the same. Fig. 9 is a sectional view of a portion of the cover. Fig. 10 shows the rocker portion.` Figs. 11, 12, and 13 are respectively achair, cradle or crib, and box 5 and-Fig. 14. shows the cover.
This invention has relation to furniture; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the sectional and extensible legs, the rocker attachments, and the covering portion formed of sections hinged together by their transverse edges, and having folding ends hinged to said sections longitudinally, the hinges being made without stops, so as to allow the sections and end pieces to fold in either direction, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The obj'ect of this invention is to provide an article of furniture which can be changed in character, according to requirement, by manipulating the sections, so that it can be set up as a table, a bedstead, a cradle or crib, a chair, rocking-chair, childs high chair, or, by dispensingwith thelegsand rails, can beformed into a box.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates the main rail-section, having slide grooves or ways a, in which the slide-section A' of the rail is seated. Through the rails holes b are made for the passage ot' fastening pins or screws, and the rails are provided with inner flange-braces, c, which are designed to be brought in contact with the upper ends of the legs when the parts are set up.
The`corner legs, B, aremade with angular seats d at their upper ends, into which the ends of thegjails are inserted, being fastened therein by inea-ns of pins or screws c. The intermediate legs, B', are secured by set-screws in railseats g, so that the middle portions of the rails .are su'pported when the article to be formed is of unusual length, as a bedstead or long table. Each of the main legs B B is slotted longitudinally along its lower portion,y and is hollow to receive the lower leg-section, h, which is provided with a clamp-screw, k, working in the slot l of the upper section, and serving to secure the lower section in place after adjustment according to the height of leg required.
C indicates the rocker attachments, which are made of stout wire or other material, having shoulders m and ends n, which are designed to be inserted in the open ends of the legs.
D represents the sectional hinged cover, consistingoi' the transverse main sections E, which are hinged together by their transverse edges p and the longitudinal end sections, F, which are hinged to the ends q of the main sections, the hinges being made without stops, so that the sections can fold in either direction. The small sections are provided with holes for fastening-pins or clamp-screws.
When the framek is set up by securing the rails to the upper ends ofthe legs, a table may be formed by placing the sectional hinged cover thereon. Abedstead may be made by shortening the legs of the table, removing the lower sections of the legs at each end, and inserting them in the upper ends of the main legs to form head and foot supports or posts. By reducing the size of the under framing and folding the cover to correspond a chair may be formed, the secondary leg-sections being placed in engagement with the hollow upper ends of the main leg-sections to form the back-support. By introducing the rockers into the,v

bottom and top. Itis kept in shape by means of the roekerattaehme11ts,whioh are connected by their ends to soeket-lugs i: on the main seetions.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with the sectional and extensible legs B B' and the sectional and extensible rail-sections A A, of the rocker attachments G and the covering portion D, oonsisting of the main sections E, hinged together by their transverse edges, and the end sections, F, hinged to the ends ot'the main sections, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with sectional and extensible legsections and sectional and extensible rail-seetions, ofthe eoverin g portion, oonsistin g of main transverse sections hinged together and earryin g hinged end sections, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARY A. MCMASTER.
