Description

FFTCE.
ABNER T. LINIKIN, OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOUNGE AND CHAIR COMBINED.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,594, dated July 17, 1849.
To all whom t may concern Be` it kno-wn that I, ABNER T. LINIKIN, of Roxbury, h/Iassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Lounge and Chair Combined, of which the following is a specification.
The invention claimed by me consists chiefly in the superior combination of the article for the ease and comfort of the invalid during all stages of diseaseto his final recovery.
The said lounge as will be seen by the accompanying drawings contains when in its smallest compass as per Fig. B an arm chair and a cricket or foot bench. The arm chair is so constructed that the back of the same may be brought to recede from an upright or perpendicular position backward to an agreeable slant or bevel to suit the convenience of the occupant by means of moving and securing the arms H thereof in the notches on the underside marked a, a, on to the two side pieces I), which pieces or supporters are, when closed, concealed in a groove under the cushioned seat, the seat of the chair marked M, and the back marked T, moved on the same axle rod P, and the inventor contemplates the improvements of raising the front of the seat at will to any pitch desirable. The cricket O, can be pushed back entirely out of sight, and runs in a groove made in the frame7 and the leg of the same R, may be stationary or detached if any at all be necessary for its support. The whole arrangement may, when not wanted, be closed up so as not to occupy over 3 feet by 2 in its surface by pushing back the cricket and folding back the back` and arms of the chair and securing the same. The principal hinges securing the two parts is at C, and the line of opening or unfolding the same is from C to D as per drawings. When completely unfolded as in View marked A, the article presents the lounge with all its joints in operation, viz,
at G G, F F, E E, all of which may be regulated to whatever pitch may be desirable. The section from D to G contains a writing desk for convenience of the invalid which will always remain in such position as not to turn the ink or other things therein contained over. The supporters or regulators s, s, s, rest against brass, or iro-n, or wooden teeth inserted in the sides of the frame as shown in red dotted lines on drawing A, marked (l, (Z, CZ. The mattress for this couch or lounge, if detached from the frame, requires but one joint as shown in the drawing to fold at G G, is to uncover the writing desk at pleasure. If, however the mattress is permanently fitted to the frame to be at G G, F F, and in this case the joint at C toward F and E to be made with a swivel joint marked T, and the length of this joint to be regulated by the thickness of the upholstery, as will be readily understood and as is represented in section marked Y. The permanent legs of said lounge are marked L, L,--. If a plain bed is desired, the joints from C, D, through F, F, and G, G, may be placed at rest and the joint from E E to D slightly elevated for the head, or left straight.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"
l. The arrangement and combination with each of the back, side arms, and forward supports of the arms of the chair for folding up when the instrument is to be used as a bed.
2. I also claim the construction and use of the double inclined plane K K for the double purpose vof a pillow to the lounge and for a writ-ing desk as described and represented.
