Description
R. RIGL.
EXTENSION BEDSTEAD.
No.180,927. ,g Patented Aug. 8, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIcE.
RUDOLF RIGL, OF DOBLING, NEAR VIENNA, ASSIGNOR TO FRANZ XAVER KATZMAYR, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,927, dated August 8, 1876; application filed April 18, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDOLF RIG-L, of Dobling, near Vienna, Austria, have invented a new and Improved Sofa-Bed, of which the following is a specification In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved double sofa bed, with cover partly taken'ofi to show construction below. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on line 0 c, Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are side views of the beds detached from each other, and Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the foot-support of the sliding bed-section when entirely detached from the main section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to an improved iron sofa-bed, for hotels, boarding-houses, &c.,. that may be readily changed from a sofa to a single bed, or to two connected beds, or to two entirely detached beds, as desired, the whole forming astrong, compact, and convenient sofa-bed for \various purposes.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in claims.
In the drawing. A represents the main section or frame of my improved sofa-bed, which is constructed of iron rods in the nature of iron bedsteads, the parts being doweled together in any suitable manner. A second interior section, B,-s'lides on longitudinal side guides or, so as to telescope in the main frame, and be readily drawn out when required. The sliding bedstead B is constructed in similar manner as the main section, and carries, on side guides b, a mattress, O, with stiffening-frame, that serves also as seat part when the bed is used as a sofa. A second mattress, O, with stifi'ening-frame, is either hung on suspensiorrbands below the seat-mattress G, or stored away on the floor below the same, to be readily taken out and placed into the main section when the sliding section is drawn out.
When the bed-sections are placed one inside the other, a seat-covering, D, recessed end bolsters D, that fit over the head and foot sections of the beds, and back or wall pillows D serve to produce an elegant sofabed, that covers all the parts of the bed-sections. The interior bed-section is drawn out until its end section forms contact with the end section of the main frame, as shown in Fig. 3, in which position it forms two beds. When the sofa-covering is taken off the telescoping section may be used as a single bed. When it is desired to make two separate beds the sliding section is taken out of the main frame, and a foot-support, E, Fig. 6, clamped or otherwise attached to the end section that has been taken out of the main frame. The sliding section forms thereby a separate bed, which may be put up in a ditferent room from the main frame, to be replaced at any time by detaching the end support and sliding the bed-section back into the main frame, storing the whole in convenient manner below the covering, and allowing the use of the bed as sofa.
scribed form a double sofa-bed that is of special advantage for hotels, families, and other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the main and sliding sections of the sofa-bed, telescoping within each other, with an inclosing cover and end bolsters, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the sliding interior bed-section with a detachable foot-support, E, to form a separate bed when detached, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The main and sliding sections, having side guide-rails to support mattress, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
