The purpose of the invention is to provide a divisional bed or a bed the spring-sustaining portion whereof is in two sections removably mounted and capable of being brought together to form a double bed, or separated to constitute two single beds with a space between them, thus rendering the bed sanitary.
A further purpose of the invention is to so construct a bed of'the character described, that one sustaining main frame only is required to support the spring-sus- Another purpose of the invention is to provide legs for the outer side portions of the-spring-sustaining. sections of the bed at the head and foot ofthe sections, and means for automatically folding said legs when the spring-sustaining sections are drawn inward or are closed together, and for dropping said legs to sustaining positions when the said sections are separated or are drawn outward. The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several partsas will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specificatiom in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1- is a perspectiveyiew ofthe improved bed, thesections 5f the body of the bed 'or the spring-sustaining sections being separated; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the bed taken practically on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, showingv one spring-supporting section in normal position, and the other carried to its extreme outer position; Fig. 3 is a longitudinalvertical section taken practically on the line33 of Fig 2; Fig. is a bottom plan view of an end of one of the body or spring sustaining sections; Fig. 5 is a detailed vertical section illustrative of controlling means for one of the'auxiliary vided with suitable legs 11, together with side connecting bars 12, the latter being preferably circular in cross section. The said main frame A is also provided with channel irons 13, that are secured in any suitable or approved manner to the head and foot sections A and B at their inner faces where their legs connect with their body portions.
i The spring supporting sections are designated on the drawings as O and 0, being two in number. The
frames for these two sections 0 and C are identical and consist of side bars 14; which are preferably made of angle-iron, as is illustrated, and connecting foot and end bars 15, which bars 15 are preferably of a solid character. The frame for each section 0 and O is provided with an independent head board or section 16, and a foot board or section 17 By preference the head board section 16 of the sliding sections 0 and O of the bed are attached directly to the framings of said sliding sections and serve to support the forward or head ends of springs 18 of any desired charaiiter, which springs are secured to the said head board's'ection in any suitable or approved manner; The independent or auxiliary foot board sections 17 of the spring supporting section C and C of the bed are ,by preference attached to the framings of the springs and the foot ends of the said springs are sustained by brackets 19 attached to the framing of the said adjustable spring supporting sec- .tions, as is best shown in Fig. 1.
In order to facilitate the adjustment of the spring supporting sections 0 and 0 their outer side bars 15 are preferably provided with handles 20 .pivotally attached thereto. Furthermore, in order to prevent the sections C and C from moving with undue friction, a friction roller 21 is located in the under face of each channel iron 13, adjacent to its outer end so as to engage with the end bars 15 of-thesaid sections 0 and C" as said bars move in said channel irons, and furthermore, friction rollers 22 are mounted to turn in thehead v and the foot bars of the said spring supporting sections 0 and O at their inner ends so that the rollers 22 will travel upon the lower members of the channel irons 13, as is shown in Fig. 6. I
The outer movement of the sliding sections 0 and C is limited preferably by attaching to their inner side edges 14, downwardlyextending brackets 23 that in the extreme outward movement of the said spring supporting sections. 0 and C engage with the side members 12 of the frame A of the bed. When said spring supporting sections 0 and C are carried outward it is necessary that their outward side portions should be 100,
supported at the head and at the foot, and to that end lesser legs 24 are provided. When the .said spring supporting sections 0 and C are carried inward, these legs are automatically folded up to lie closely within the angular side portions of said sections, but when the 105 said spring supporting sections are carried outward these auxiliary legs 24 drop automatically to a sustaining. position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These movements of the auxiliary legs 24 are brought about in the following manner: Rods 25 are attached ,to the inner 110 faces of the outward side bars 14 of the spring supporting section'sO and C, and these rods at their inner ends are made to pass through eyes 26 or other equivalent guides that are attached to the head and the foot members 15 of the said spring supporting sections and where the rods pass through the eyes 26 they are' less degree, and in turn carry the auxiliary legs 24 up to a folded horizontal position within the outer side rail members of the spring supporting sections 0 and O A bed constructed as has been described permits of two persons sleeping in what is known as a double bed,
' and yet also admits of a separation of the individual springs whenever it is desired, so that in the one article I combine a double bed and two single beds which may be brought into requisition Whenever desired. Each spring supporting'section C and C is practically a bed within itself.
,Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- 1. A bed comprising a main frame having head and foot sections, guides carried at the inner faces of the head and foot sections, spring supporting sections mounted for lat eral movement on said guides to and from each other, means for limiting the outward movement of said spring supporting sections, pivoted supports for the outward portions of the said spring supporting sections, and means for automatically folding and dropping the supports.
2. A bed comprising a main frame, channel irons secured to the main frame, friction rollers located in the under face of each channel iron adjacent to its ends, and bed sections movable to and from each other in said main frame, the said sections having bars mounted to slide in said channel irons and engage the said friction rollers, the said bars being provided with friction rollers mounted to travel upo the lower members of said channel irons.

In a bed a main frame having head and foot sections, and connecting side members, channel irons secured to the inner faces of the head and foot sections, friction rollers located in the under face of each channel iron adjacent to its ends, spring supporting sections, having head and foot bars and side bars, the head and foot bars being mounted to slide in said channel irons and engage the said friction rollers, the head and foot bars being provided at their some inner ends with friction rollers mounted to travel upon the lower members of said channel irons, and stops connected with the inner side bars of the said spring supporting sections and adapted to engage with the side members of the main frame for limiting the outward movement of said spring supporting sections.
4. In a bed, a main frame comprising a head and foot board section, and connecting side sections, spring sustaining sections having sliding and guided movement relatively to the main frame, each of said spring sustaining sections being provided with an independent head and foot board, auxiliary legs for supporting the outward portions of the spring sustaining sections, and means for automatic ally raising and lowering the said legs as the sections are moved inward or outward. 1
5. In :1 bed, a main frame comprising head and foot sections, and connecting side members, and channel irons secured to the inner faces of the foot and head sections, spring sustaining sections mounted to slide in the said channel irons, each spring sustaining section being provided with an independent head and foot portion, legs pivotzllly connected with the spring sustaining sections, and means for automatically dropping and raising the said legs to a folded position as the said spring sustaining sections are manipulated.
6. In a bed or similar article, the combination with a main frame comprising end members and connecting side members, of a supporting object slldabiy mounted in the said frame, legs pivotally attached to the said slidahle objcct, rods attached to the said legs, and pivotally attached to the end portions of the said slidable objects, the said rods at their latter point of attachment being provided with crank terminals, the said rods being adapted in the movements of the slidable objects, to engage with the side members of the main carrying frame.
7. In a bed, a main frame comprising head and foot sections and connecting side members, guides on the inner faces of the foot and head sections, spring sustaining sections mounted to slide on said guides, each spring sustain ing section being provided with an independent head and foot portion, legs pivotally connected with the spring sustaining sections, and means connected with said legs and said sections for automatically droppingand raising said legs when the sections are mahipulated.
8. A bed comprising a main frame, spring supporting sections mounted in the said main frame for lateral movement to and .from each other, legs pivotully attached to said spring supporting sections, and means for moving said legs when the sections are manipulated, the said means comprising rods attached to said legs and pivotally connected with the end portions of said spring supporting sections.
