PATENT OFFICE.
JEAN MRIE GLOPPE, OF LYON, FRANCE.
DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1920.
Application filed January 23, 1920. Serial No. 353,410.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JEAN MARIE GLOPPE, manufacturer, and a citizen of the French Republic, of Lyon, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks, of which the following is a specica` tion.
This invention has for its object a table (of thekind called a flat top desk) possessing a flexible cover contained in the interior of the desk, and which will completely cover the top of the same.
The annexeddrawings show by way of example, the principle of this table, and one form of its appliance.
Figure l is an elevation of the table.
Fig-2 is a section on line 2 2.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the table.
Fig. 4 shows on the left side, the flexible coverrwhen it is completely open, and on the right the flexible cover when completely closed and the table covered.
Fig. 5 shows the grooves for the flexible cover on the upwardly projecting sides of the table.
Fig. 6 shows the attachment of the upwardly projecting sides and their manner of articulation.
The table proper is constructed with a rectangular board A provided with hollow portion B for the purpose of receiving the flexible cover C. It is supported by posts and panels, so that it has all the advantages 0f an ordinary flat top desk. The table is provided with drawers D in its sides.
The flexible cover' C is contained in the centralpart E of the desk, and in no way interferes with the working of the drawers; also at each end of the table the panels turn down (Fig. 6) having, a double object:
1. Enlarging the surface of the table when' they are'in the position shown by F1 (Fig.
l) being maintained in this position byV small slides H.
2. Forming the upwardly projecting ends to receive the flexible cover when in the p0- sition shown in full lines.
To open or close the desk is a very simple operation. Vhen it is desired to close it, the end pieces are placed in the posi tion shown in full lines in Figs. l and 6; the making up piece G (Fig. 4, left side) is raised by the two finger' holes I, the flexible cover is then pulled up by the piece G so that it occupies the closed position (Fig. 4, right side).
This making up piece G is provided with a lock J which may be locked by a key K.
'In order to prevent the sides F from falling down, the flexible cover C is provided on each leg with small projections L which fit into the molding M of the sides F.
With this design the same advantages are obtainedwith flat topped desk as with an AmericanV roll top desk.
lhat l claim and desire to secure by Lettcrs Patent of the United States is A flat top desk having faces on opposite sides, a well arranged substantially midway between said faces, a flexible cover, arranged, when in open position, in said well, and end wall members hingedly connected to the ends of the desk and foldable thereagainst, said members, when extended above the top of the desk forming guides for said flexible cover and coacting therewith t0 form a complete cover thereover, said members having grooves on their inner sides for the reception of the ends of the cover and also having guard molding on their inner sides, said cover having projections to coact with said molding to lock the said mem bers in upright position.
ln witness whereof I affix my signature.
JEAN MARIE GLOPPE.
