Inveter. fwd/ML mw UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE FERDINAND MSSER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,697, dated January 7,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND MssEE,
oi' Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Hin ge, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side elevation, representing the shutter open. Fig. 2 is a plan, showing the shutter open in different positions.
Y Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The nature of my invention relates to a hinge to be used on shutters, window-blinds, doors, and other like structures. The objects of my invention is to provide a stop to a hinge, whereby the shutter or door to which it is attached may be held at various positions, both open and closed, or at certain intermediate points, as will be more fully explained hereinafter. It consists in attaching to the lower arm of the hinge a fork embracing the hub, and operatedvby means of a small lever, with its fulcrum so placed as to give the operator sufficient power to easily detach the fork from the recesses in the upper arm of the hinge. The lever is weighted so as to remain wherever it may beplaced.
In construction my invention is as follows: A is the lower arm oi' my improved hinge, screwed to the window or door frame, and B isthe upper arm attached to the shutter. Two
grooves, a a., are cast into the side of' the arm A, which receive the prongs of fork C. The lever D, which is jointed to the lower part of the fork C, has its fulcrum at d, and is provided with the knob d', serving for a handle and balance-weight for said lever. The upper arm B is provided with a series of recesses, d d, which receive the prongs of the fork, and are so situated as" to hold the shutter at various points, as may be desired. l i
It will be observed that only one cf my improved hinges for each shutter or door is used, as the ordinary hinge will serve for the upper hinges. I
In case it is used for doors the recesses are so arranged as to hold the door entirely open or partially closed, which dispenses with doorstopstc.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The arm Aprovided with the vertically-sliding latching-fork C and the lever I) pivoted to the stud d which is projected from the edge of said arm A, combined with the arm B provided with recesses a to receive the ends of said fork, all constructed, arranged, and oper ating as set forth.
FERDINAND MssEE.
