SHUTTER-OPERATOR.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,064, dated June 10, 1856.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM COLLINS, of Salisbury, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Opening and Closing Window Blinds and Shutters Without Raising the Sashes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had t-o the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is an end View of a window casing partially bisected, with a shuter attached in an open or partially open state the lower hinge or bearing being bisected. Fig. 2, is a front View of ditto. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section of ditto, (as) Fig. l, showing the plane of section.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention consists in having an inclined rod placed in one of the stiles or side pieces of the casing, said rod having its lower end bent upward and fitted within a socket, which forms the lower bearing or hinge of the shutter or blind. By turning the rod, the shutter or blind may be opened or closed without raising the sash, as will be hereinafter shown and described.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents a casing of a window or blind, and B, is a shutter or blind attached to the casing.

The upper end of the shutter or blind is attached to the casing by an ordinary hinge (a), but the lower part of the shutter or blind has a socket fitted to it, said socket being formed of a plate bent similar to aloop, so as to form a chamber or recess (c) in the shutter when the plate is attached to it, see Figs. l, and 3. The socket may be formed of cast metal, this would probably be preferable, as the upper part of the socket should be closed, or have a top or cover, as shown at (al), Fig. 1. The back part of the socket (b) projects a short distance beyond the back edge of the shutter or blind, and an aperture is made at its lower end to receive the bent or upright portion (e) of a rod C, which passes obliquely through one of the stiles of the casing A, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The inner end of the rod C, has a knob D, upon it, the lower end of the knob resting or bearing upon a plate (f) fitted in the stile. Longitudinally through the knob D, there passes a pin (g) which may be shoved in holes (71,) in the plate in order to secure the shutter or blind in an open or closed state. Holes may also be made in the plate so that the shutter or blind may be secured at intermediate points between an open and closed state.

From the above description it will be seen that by turning the rod C, at the inner side of the stile, the lower bent portion (e) of the rod will actuate the shutter or blind, and cause it to open or close according to the direction in which the rod is turned.

The above device is simple, eicient, and economically made and applied, there are no parts liable to get out of repair, and but little power is required to actuate the shutter or blind.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to Vsecure by Letters Patent, is,

Opening and closing the blind or shutter B, by means of the inclined or oblique rod C, which passes through the stiles of the casing, and having its lower or outer end bent and fitted within a socket (b) attached to the lower part of the shutter or blind, the rod and blind being secured at desired points by means of the pin in the knob D, substantially as shown and described.
