SAMUEL 1). PAGE, OF -DES' MOINES,'-IOWA1 1 COVER FOR AUCTION-SALES"RECORDS AND THE IiIKE.
' I Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented June 29; 1920.
Application filed May 6, 191 8, Serial'No. 232,976. Renewed Ap1'i1'3, 1920. Serial No. 371,140.
To all "whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Des Moines, in the'county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Cover for Auction-Sales Records and the like, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cover'for auction sales records and the like,
of simple and inexpensive construction, particularly adapted for use at-auction sales and other places whereit is necessary to usea number of sheets of paper in. making records where it is necessary to protect p'art-ofthe sheets while others are being used.
A further object is'to provide such a cover having means for holding blank sheets of paper, and'to provide an auxiliary binder connected by a flexible hinge,-having one member adapted to be secured tojthe'cover, and provided with a slot to receive a stiff member on a pad of statement sheets.
Still a further object is to provide such a cover having on another member'a pocket to receive a stiff member on the pad of sheets, and having the stiff sheet connected with the cover by a flexible hinge and adapted. to protect the last named pad of sheets.
\Vith theseand other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the Various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointedout in my claim, .and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a top or plan view of the cover in its open position, parts being broken away to better illustrate the construction.
Fig. 2 shows a sectional view, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows a side View of one of the cover members having receiving pockets thereon, showing the auxiliary binder secured thereto, and holding a pad of statement sheets.
Fig. 4 shows a sectional view, taken on the line 4 1 of Fig; 3.
Fig. 5'shows an enlarged, detail, sectional view of one of the sheets of paper with the carbon or duplicating material on the back thereof.
Fig. 6 shows a sectional view, taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 7 shows a sectional view, taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
improved cover, which are connected a flexible hinge or binder member 12, which is ofsuch width as 'topermit the cover'members 10 and'll'tobe-folded over oneach other with considerable material received between them.
The cover member 10 is provided on its inner surface near its corners, with four triangular pockets 13. These pockets are designedto'receive blank sheets of paper 14, which maybe used for any desired purpose.
I preferably use in connection'with the cover member 10, a binder'comprising-abottom sheet or member 15 of comparatively stiff material, and a top sheet 16' of'comp'aratively stiff material, saidsheets being connected'a'long adjacent side edges by means 'ofa fiexible'binder 17. The binder member '15 is provided nearits upper edge with a horizontal slot 18. The bindermember 15 is of suchsize that its corners may be inserted into the] pockets'13 "forsupportin'g and holdingthe binder in'the cover.
The binder is designed to hold "a pad of sheets, which pad is indicated generally by the reference character A. These sheets may consist of a number of sheets 19, having adj acent to one edge indexcharacters 20,'and a number'of statement sheets above 'the'sheets 19. Each of the statement sheets is preferably divided into a number of parts 21, each of I which parts is ada ted to comprise a blank for a statement. he statement sheets are provided with perforations for dividing the said sheets'into the portions 21, the perforations being indicated by the reference character 22. V
The pad of sheets A is bound together any suitable way, and has at its back a still tongue or the like 23," shown in Fig. 4, adapted to be extended through the slot 18,
. as'ill'ustrated in said figure.
In the practical use of that portion of my invention which has already been described, it will be seen that the cover members 10 and 11 may be opened and folded over against each other, with the inner surface of the cover member 10 up. The binder member 16 may then be folded over for exposing-the top statement sheet. A statement showing the sale, includin the article sold, the price and the name of t e purchaser, may be made out on one of the portions or sections 21, and
such section may then be'torn off along the perforated lines and handed to the purchaser. The statement sheets, one of which is shown in Fig. 5, are provided on the back with suitable carbon or reproducing material 2 1. V
, In this connection, it may be mentioned that in making out a statement, the binderstatement sheets will be exposed to drafts of air where the work is being done.
At the upper end of the cover member 11 on the inner surface thereof, there is provided a pocket 25 open at its upper end. I provide for use with the cover member 11, a pad indicated generally by the reference character B, made up of sheets which may be ruled,.as shown in Fig. 1, for listing the articles sold. The sheets of the pad B are provided with carbon backs, as are the statement sheets.
' It may be mentioned in this connection that the carbon backs may be provided only on the alternate sheets of the statement sheets and the listing sheets above described.
The sheets of the pad B are bound to I gether in any suitable way, and theback of the pad is providedwith a stiff tongue 26, shown in Fig. 7, adapted to slip into the pocket 25.
Secured to the cover member 11 by means of the flexible binder 27, is a stifl leaf 28,
adapted to cover the pad 13 when it is not in use and to be placed under the first two sheets thereof when the first or top pair of sheets are being used. I In the practlcal use of my lIIlPI'OVBd'COVBI for auction sales records and the like, when a sale'is being conducted the portion 10 with the binder secured thereto, is folded over under the member 11, and the stiff leaf 28 is preferably placed under the uppermost pair of sheets of the pad 13. 'The member 16 0f the binder will hold the sheets of the pad A from belng blown about by the wind. The article sold, the name of the purchaser and the purchase price and terms, are put.
7 down on the sheets of the pad 13 as the transactions occur, If the purchaser desires a statement at once, the cover is thrown over until the member 10 is up. The stiff leaf 28 is placed on the outside of the'pad B, so
as to protect its sheets from the wind; the binder member '16 is placed under the two statement is written out for the purchaser, torn off and handed to him. A copy of the statement will be left on the second sheet beneath the top sheet of the statement pad. Attention is called to the convenience in handling my improved sales cover, whereby the various sheets may be held against be ing blown about by the wind at all times.
If it is desired to use extra paper for scratch paper or the like, the binder may be quickly and easily removed from the pockets 13, and some of the sheets 14 may be taken out. n
It will be seen that the pads A and B may be quickly and easily replaced whenever top sheets of thestatement pad A, and a desired, but that the cover is practically permanent and may be used with a large numher of said pads.
'It will be obvious that my improved cover for auction sales records and the like, with 7 its various parts, may be put to a great variety of uses, and that some changes may be made n theconstructlon and arrangement of the parts, without departing from the essential intent and purposes of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my connection along one side edge, one of said cover members having on the inside a plurality of pockets, a binder comprising a pair of cover members having a flexible connection alongone side edge, one of the binder cover members being received in said pockets and having adjacent to one end a transverse slot, a padof sheetsconnected at one end, said pad having adjacent to said end a stiff back member provided with a tongue.
received in said slot, whereby the pad sheets are connected at one end, and thefbinder cover members are connected at one side edge to permit a binder cover member to cover the pad, or to be inserted between the sheets 'of the pad,-and whereby when such binder member is inserted between the sheets of the pad, the members of the cover may be folded over for covering the pad.
