4noon s'ror j AND HOLDER.
Specification `of Letters Patent. Patented June 29, 1920.
Application led February 11, 1919. Serial No. 276,296.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN WEsLEY NEW- soM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Breckenridge, in the kcounty of Stephens, State of rleXas, have invented new and useful Door Stops and Holders; and Iy do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains -to make and use the same.
The invention relates to door stops and holders and has for its object toy provide a door stop and holder, which will limit the swinging of the door when opened and will also hold the door open when it is desired to maintain the same in an open position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door stop and holder, which is so positioned that when the door is swung open, the outer edge of the door will engage a beveled surface of a pivoted member, camming the same outwardly on its pivot against the pulling action of a spring until the edge ofthe door engages ay stop and the pivoted member having means which will engage the opposite side of the door from the side engaged by the stop whereby the door will be held in opened position.
A further object is to provide a pivoted door holder and stop having a triangular or heart shaped door engaging end adaptedk to bo cammed outwardlyT by the edge of the door, a stop for the door and spring means carried by the pivotal pin of the door holder and engaging the door holder whereby the saine will be sprung into engagement with the edge of the door, after the edge of the door has passed bythe triangular head.
With the above and other Objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a door and the door holder and stop, showing the door in open position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the door holder, showing the position assumed by the door when being held open.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the form shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a sectional `view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. f Y Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 the nume-ral 1 designates a conventional .form of door frame and hingedly connected thereto, as at 2 is a conventional form of door 3. Pivoted by means of a'screw 4, which screws into the iioor is adoor holder 5. The holder 5 is formed preferably from `a single piece of material, such as wood or the like, however the portion 6 thereof is thin enough to pass under the bottom edge of the door. A triangular or heart shaped enlargement 7 is provided on the end of the member 5, said enlargement having beveled surfaces 8, against which the outer edge 9 of the door engages when the door is opened, thereby camming the pivoted member 5 outwardly on its pivot point 4. A door stop 10 is secured. to the floor of the room by means of screws 11, this door stop being for the purpose of limiting the opening of the door.
lVhen the door is opened, the inner edge 9 of the same engages the beveled surface 8 of the enlargement 7 thereby camming the same outwardly and when the door engages the stop 10 the member 5 will be pulled inwardly by means of thefspring 12, which has one of its ends connected to one of the eyes 13 of the pivoted member 5 and its other end connected to a screw eye 14 in the floor, the inward movement of the pivoted member 5 being limited by the stop 10.
It will be obvious that the door holder and stop may be applied to a door that is right or left hand swung, also that it will only be necessary to shift the spring 15.
Referring to Figs. 3, 4 and 5 in which a modified form of the invention is shown, it will be seen that the coiled spring 12 and screw eye 14 are eliminated and that the screw 4, which is securely screwed in to the floor is provided with a slot 4b, which slot has clamped therein the end 15 of a flat spring 16. The free end of said spring is disposed between lugs'17 carried by the pivoted member 5. It will be seen that the operation of the form of the invention is substantially the same as in the form shown in Fig. 1, also that the door holder and stop is so oonstruoted that the salne may be applied to a door that is either right or left hand swung.
From the above it will be seen that a door holder and stop is provided which is spring actuated and one which, when it is desired to close the door can be easily pulled out of engagement with the edge 9 of the door with the foot, if desired.
The invention having been set rforth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. A door holder and stop comprising a pivotal pin secured in the floor, a pivoted member Carried by said pin and being provided with a triangular shaped enlargement adapted to be engaged by the door, said pivotal pin having rigidly secured thereto one end of a flat spring, the free end of said flat spring being disposed between lugs .carried by the pivotal member and means whereby the swinging movement of the door and pivotal movement of the pivoted member will be limited after the door passes the enlargement of the pivotal member.
2. A door holder and stop Comprising a member pivoted to the ioor, said member having a reduced portion adapted to pass under the door horizontally and an enlarged upwardly extending triangular shaped head adapted to be engaged by the door for forcing the pivoted member outwardly, a stop located to one side of the pivoted member and spaced from the triangular shaped head, a spring for normally maintaining the pivoted memberin engagement with said stop, said stop being higher than the reduced portion of the pivoted member and forming means for limiting the movement of the pivoted member and holding the door against pivotal movement after it has passed the enlarged triangular shaped head.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
