Be it known that I, AN'roINn'rTn A. COF- FIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Stops, of which the following is a specifr cation.

The invention relates to safety devices applicable to doors, whereby a door may be held against opening movement, and constitutes an improvement over the device as set forth in my Patent Number 1,037,139, issued September 3, 1912. The invention has for its primary objects; the provision of a device of the character specified adapted either to permit a limited opening movement of the door with which it is used, or to hold the door securely in completely closed position; the provision of a stop adapted to lie beneath the door and be moved from locking to release position without removing the device from the floor; and the provision of a locking device of cheap construction which can be used under a variety of conditions without the use of adjusting devices and which can be applied and removed without defacing the woodwork. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Fig. 1 is a general plan view showing the relation of the locking means to a door when the door is locked in partially open position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fie'. 1, but with the device applied to loci the door in completely closed position; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the door and floor, showing the device in side elevation and provided with the holding block; Figs. 4t and 5 are plan and side elevation views respectively of the stop itself, and Fig. Gis a perspective view of the locking block einployed when it is desired to lock the door in completely closed `position as indicated in Fig. 2.

The device of the present application, like that of my Patent Number 1,037 ,1139, is intended to take the place of chains and similar devices now in use for permitting a limited opening of the door, but at the same time preventing such an opening as would permit the entrance of objectionable persons, which chain devices and other devices corresponding thereto as heretofore used are more or less objectionable because they disfigure the door and door framing and because they cannot be removed without leaving the traces of their attachment on the woodwork. The device of the present application is designed in addition to provide a very secure lock for the door when in its completely closed po- Sltion.

Briefly stated` the device in its preferred form consists of a small casting which lies upon the floor beneath the lower edge of the 4door and which it is impossible to remove without closing the door, the said device being placed adjacent the free edge of the door in such position that it may be swung laterally to clear the free edge of the door when it is desired to dispense with the lock. This arrangement permits of the moving of the stop to inoperative position by means of the foot, and without removing` the device from the floor, as necessary with the device of my patent heretofore referred to.

Referring to Figs. 4l and 5 of the drawing, it will be seen that the device consists of a plate 1 provided at one end with an upwardly projecting stop 2 and at the other end with a screw 3 which passes through a perforation in the end of the plate 1. The screw 3 serves to secure the device to the floor, as indicated in Figs. 1., Q, and 3, the screw being inserted so as to prevent the removal of the device from the floor and at the same time to permit the plate to swing freely around the screw as a pivot or axis.

As indicated in Fig. 1, the plate 1 is placed beneath the door 4L adjacent the free edge of such door so that when the door is partially opened its rear side takes against the stop 2 and prevents a further opening movement oit' the door. Inasnmch as the plate 1 lies beneath the door it cannot be removed without removing the screw 3, and the time required for this would deter any one from attempting to force an unauthorized entrance. ln order to permit of the opening of the door the device must be swung to the position indicated in dotted lines, and this siviiigggiligi movement can obviously not be accomplished from the outside, as the swinging movement requires the closure of the door, thus cutting otl access to the device from one upon the outside of the door. On the other hand the device may be very readily swung to inoperative position from the inside of the door by simply closing the door and pressing the foot against the upwardly projecting stop 2. lVhen in the inoperative position indicated -in dotted lines in Fig. 1 the device lies close to the door jamb and offers very little obstruction to those passing through the doorway. The device also offers the advantage over the device of my prior patent heretofore referred to, in that it is not necessary to use a wood ller strip upo-n the top of the plate 1 in order to prevent the upward movement of such plate where the space between the bottom of the door and the plate is large, as the screw 3 prevent-s such upward movement.

Vhen it is desired to lock the door in completley closed position, the block 5 preferably of wood) is employed, this block fitting between the stop 2 and the back of the door as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. The groove 6 which fits around the stop 2 affords additional security, as it prevents danger of the block being slipped sidewise over the face of the plate by means of a wireV or other implement inserted from beneath the door.

It will be understood that the particular form of the device as described and shown is merely illustrative and that various changes might be made without departing' from t-he spirit of the invention which contemplates broadly the swinging stop with its plate beneath the lower edge of the door and so positioned adjacent the free edge of the door that the stop may be swung laterally to clear the edge of the door when the door is moved to closed position. The screw as shown is the preferred pivot means for the plate l, but any other desired form of pivot means might bey employed, and although it is preferred that the pivot means also hold the plate against vertical removal, it is not necessarily the case. The character of the stop 2 may be varied to suit conditions, as may also the relative arrangement of the screw or its equivalent and .the stop with respect to the body of the plate. The locking block 5 as indicated in Fig. 6 is preferably employed, but my invention contemplates broadly any type of locking means which may be placed between the back of the door and the stop or other part carried by the plate when the door is closed, the only requirement being that this locking element be` capable ,of movement so as to permit the use of the device as indicated in Fig. l.

Having thus described my invention` and illustrated its use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following l. A safety device for a swinging door comprising a plate lying on the floor be# neath the door and adjacent the free edge of the door, a stop projecting upward from the rear portion of the plate and adapted to engage the rear side of the door when the door is partially opened, and downwardly projecting means to the rear of the front surface of the door when closed for pivoting the front portion of the plate to the floor, the stop and downwardly projecting means being positioned at a distance from the free edge of the door less than the length of the device, so that when the door is closed and the stop is swung laterally from its operative position it will clear such free edge of the door and permit the door to move to complete open position.

2. A safety device for a swinging door comprising a plate lying on the floor beneath the door and adjacent the free edge of the door, a stop projecting upward from the rear portion of the plate and adapted to engage the rear side of the door when the door is partially opened, and downwardly projecting screw means for pivoting the front portion of the plate to the floor and preventing its removal therefrom, the stop and screw means being positioned at a distance from the free edge of the door less than the length of the device so that when the stop is swung laterally from its operative position it will clear such free edge of the door and permit the door to move to complete open position, the position of the stop and screw means being such as to require the substantial closure of the door before the stop can be swung clear of the edge of thev door to permit the door to open.

A safety device for a swinging' door comprising a plate lying on the floor beneath the door and adjacent the free edge of the door, a stop projecting upward from the rear portion of the plate and adapted to engage the rear side of the door when the door is partially opened, downwardly projecting means to the rear of the front sur- 'fface of the door when closed for pivoting the front portion of the plate to the floor, the stop and downwardly projecting means being positioned at a distance from the free edge of the door less than the length of the device so that when the stop is swung laterally from its operative position it will clear such free edge of the door and permit the door to move to complete open position, and a movable member adapted to fit between the said stop and the back of the door when the door is completely closed, the relation of the stop to the free edge of the door being such that the said edge of the door must be brought closely adjacent the door j amb in order to permit the stop to be disengagedA from the door.
