To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE R. MCALLAS- TER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to folding beds and more particularly to the type in which a bed frame is movable upon a suitable support to an upright position in order that the bed may be compactly arranged in a room when not in use, an object of this invention being to provide a means for holding the mattress to the bed frame when the latter is upright, such means being of simple construction so that it may be readily operated by one unskilled with mechanical structures and the means also being so constructed and arranged that it will not make the occupancy of the bed uncomfortable.

To these and other ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. 5 of another embodiment of the invention in which the base plate of the mattress-securing-andsustaining means is arranged on the under side of the wire fabric.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the base of a supporting member which has two uprights 2 rising therefrom and to which the side bars 3 of the bed frame are pivoted at 4: in order that the bed frame may swing from a horizontal position or position of use shown in Fig. 2, to the upright or folded position shown in Fig. 1.

The bed frame in this instance embodies in addition to the side bars 1 which are made of angle iron, a cross piece 5 at the foot or swinging end of the bed and a cross piece 6 at the head or inner end of the bed, the cross piece 6 being supported on castings or blocks 7 which space such cross piece 6 from the side bars 3 so that the fabric 8 which connects the

5 and 6 will have its plane at a slight angle to the plane of the side bars 3. The blocks or spacing devices 7 support a transversely extending weight 9 which tends to counterbalance the foot end of the bed. No claim is made in this application to this counter-balancing device nor to the spacing blocks 7 which produces the inclination of the fabric with reference to the side bars of the bed frame as these form the subject matter of other applications filed by me.

The feature of the invention is the sustaining-and-securing means for the mattress 10. This sustaining-and-securing means in this instance comprises a base member 11 preferably in the form of an elongated piece supported in this instance at the foot or swinging end of the bed frame. The supporting means therefor preferably embodies two hooks 12 fastened at 13 to the underside of the base member and extending laterally from said base member so as to engage about the cross piece 5 at the foot of the bed. It is apparent that, when the bed frame is in its lowermost position, no strain will be imposed on these hooks, but that when the bed frame is in an upright position as shown in Fig. 1, the hooks will sustain the base member 11 and the mattress. In the embodiment shown in Figsl to 5 the base member 11 rests upon the fabric 8 whereas in the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 the base member 11 lies on the under side of the fabric 8 and the hooks 12 are deflected in the manner shown in Fig. 6 so that such hooks may engage about the cross piece 5.

To hold the mattress in engagement with the projecting means, provision may be made for engaging the mattress on its upper side and transversely thereof to one side of the projecting means, preferably, at a point between such projecting means and This engaging-andholding means, in this instance, consists of a strap having two

The sustaining-and-holding means is a simple construction and may be re'adily manipulated by one unskilled in mechanical structures, thus permitting. the mattress to be readily detached fromthe bed or readily secured in position on such bed, The holding-and-sustaining means for the mattress is detachable from the bed frame so that its use may be dispensed with if desired orit may beused inconnection with other structures.

As the clamp engages the mattress at any desired distance from the end of the mattress, it is possible to use mattresses of difple. Furthermore, the mattress may be so adjusted with reference to the weight or head piece 9 that a desired bulging of the mattress may be obtained so as to work the mattress to soften the latter when the bed frame is thrown to an upright position.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In'combination'with a bed frame, and V a mattress supported thereon, projecting means secured to the frame and engaging the under side of the mattress, and means extending across the upper side of the mattress from one side of the bed frame to the other and to one side of the pro ecting means to secure the mattress to the bed frame.

In combinationwith a bed frame and a mattress supported thereon, a basemember extending transversely of the mattress on the under side thereof, projecting means arranged on said base member for. engaging with the underside of the mattress, and flexible means carried bysaid base member extending across the upper side of the mattress to one side of the projecting means to secure the mattress, to the bed frame.

7. A mattress securing means comprising a base member, projectingmeans on said base member for engaging with the under.

8. A mattress securing and. sustaining means comprising a rigid base member adapted .to be positioned between the, mattress and the bedframe to cooperate with the under side of the mattress, hooks carried. by said base member for detachably engaging with the foot of the bed, and

means connected to opposite 'ends of said base member for engaging the upper side of the mattress to secure the mattress to the bed frame.

9. A mattress sustaining and securing means comprising a base member, hooks carried by said base member for detachably engaging with the bed, projecting means on said base member for engaging the under side of the mattress, and flexible means on said base member for extending across the upper side of the mattress to one side of the projecting means to secure the mattress to the bed frame.

10. A mattress securing and sustaining means comprising a rigid base member adapted to be positioned between the mattress and the bed frame to cooperate with the under side of the mattress, hooks carried by said base member for detachably engaging the foot of the bed, and flexible means connected to opposite ends of the base member for engaging the upper side of the mattress to secure the mattress to the bed frame.

11. A mattress securing and sustaining means comprising a rigid base member having projecting portions for engaging the under side of a mattress, means for detachably securing said base member to a bed frame, and a flexible securing means connected to opposite ends of the base member for drawing the mattress in firm engagement with the projecting means on the base member.
