BEDSTEAD ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1919.
Application filed May 22, 1909. Serial No. 497,581.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK NV. KING, a citizen ofthe United States, residing' at Jacksonville, in the county of Duval, State of Florida, Ahave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description `of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art `to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates `to a bedstead attachment and more particularly to the class of detachable sides and clamps therefor `for attachments to bedsteads.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character in which side 'sections may be clamped to a bedstead to prevent or overcome any possibility of a persen occupying the bed from falling therefrom while sleeping'.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a bedstead attachment in which foldable side sections may be clamped to the side rails of a metal or wooden bedstead so as to prevent the occupant from falling out of the bed and which side sections may be brought to a raised or lowered position at the will of an operator and furthermore these sections may be removed and folded so that the same may be conveniently packed in a trunk when desiring to transport the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of this character which is simple, thoroughly reliable and etlicient in operation, and that is cheap and inexpensive in the manufacture.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, to enable those skilled in the art to practice the same and as brought out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings t-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bedstead of the metal type with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the vline 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal view through the clamp member and one side rail of the bedstead. Fig. 4L is a rear elevation of the clamp member detached. Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the application ofthe clamp member to a wooden side rail of a wooden bedstead. Fig. 16 is a detail perspective view of the movable clamping jaw and its adjusting screw or bolt.
Similar reference `characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
In thedrawings, the numeral 8 designates generally a metal bedstead which is of the usual or ordinary construction, `having substantially L-shaped side bars or rails 9, connected to the head and foot sections thereof.
The attachment comprises side guards or sections 10, each of which vare formed of two `parts hinged together as at 11, to Vpermit the vfolding thereof, so that the same may be packed for shipment in a trunk. The frames 12, of the side sections or guards 10 are made up with a plurality of spaced vertical rods 13, suitably connected to the longitudinal rails of the frame 12.
To adjustably and detachably mount the side guards or sections 10, to the rails 9, of the bedstead there are provided clamp members comprising elongated plates 14E, each formed at its upper terminal with a right angularly disposed ear 15, and at its lower terminal with spaced hook-shaped alining ears 1G, which latter are adapted to receive therein the lower longitudinal rail of the frame of the side guard or section 10, when in raised or elevated position and the ear 15, at the opposite end is provided with a perforation or opening slidably receiving one vertical rod 18, of the said frame.
Connected to the rear face of each plate 14, is a right angular bracket 17, formed at its free end with a depending bearing 18, through which passes one end of an adjust.- ing screw 19, which latter also has its bearing in the plate 14, and this adjusting screw 19, is formed with a winged head 20, to permit the turning thereof when mounting the side guards upon the bedstead. In threaded engagement with the adjusting screw 19, and supported thereby is a movable aw 21, which latter is adapted to engage the inner face of the side bar or rail 9 of the bedstead when the same has been positioned between this jaw and the plate 14, for connecting the clamp in position on the side bar or rail.
Connected to the inner free end of the adjusting screw 19, is a nut 22, which latter holds Said adjusting screw against displacement when mounted in the bracket 1'?, and
the plate 14, of the clamp. It is of course to be understood that with each side guard or section 10, are used two of these clamps for the proper mounting of the said guard or section upon the side bar or rail of the bedstead.
In attaching the side guards 10, to the bedstead 8, the same are brought into a position to permit the clamps to be connected to the side rails or bars 9, to said bedstead, and these side guards 10 are raised to a position so as to have their lowermost rails engage and rest in the hook ears 1G, of the clamps. Now to lower the side guards an operator raises the same until their lowermost bars disengage from the hook ears of the clamps and then by pushing downward on the said guards the same may be brought to a lower position.
What is claimed is l. The combination with a side section havin@ vertical rods, of clamp members adjustabily and detachably connecting the said section to a bed, each clamp comprising a plate having rigid outwardly and upwardly curled spaced ears at one end to receive the lower edge of the section, a right angular perforated guide ear at the opposite end of the plate receiving one vertical rod of the section, an extension on the plate, an adjustable screw supported by the extension and plate and a movable jaw acted upon by the screw and adapted to clamp between it and the plate a side rail of a bed.
2. An attachment of the class described comprising side guards, each formed of double hinged sections and having spaced vertical rods, plates having guide ears slidably receiving a pair of the vertical rods of the side guards, rigid bearing means located at the lower end of the plate and adapted to receive and form a rest for the lower edges of the guard, brackets fixed to said plates and projecting at right angles therefrom, adjusting screws mounted in the brackets, and movable jaws operated by said adjusting screws for clamping the plates to the side rails of a bedstead.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa ture, in presence of two witnesses.
