BED'.
Application led June 21,
'the present invention relates to beds for hospital purposes, the object being to provide a structure having various supports and adjustments of a novel character that `Will make it practically universally applicable to different patients and ailments.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is an end elevation,
Figure 4 is a detail view showing the mounting for the bed bottom fabric,
Figure 5 is a detail cross sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is a detail sectional vieW through the body rest.
in the embodiment illustrated, a body frame is provided, including side rails 7 connected by end rails 8 and 9 and supported on legs 10. The legs are preferably tubular and may have extension rods 11 slidably mounted therein and adapted to be held by set screws 12, whereby the height of the bed may be varied.
lirectly above the legs the side rails are provided with socket pieces 13, into which are screwed posts 14. These posts have at their upper ends jounal boxes 15, in which are journaled rollers 16 that extend across the head and foot portions of the body frame. To the rollers are attached the ends of a fabric bed bottom 17. The
rollers have square ends for engagement by a suitable Wrench and also have ratchet Wheels 18 adapted to be engaged by holding paWls 19. Thus any desired tautness of the bottom -may be obtained.v
On the gudgeons of the front rollers 16 are journaled the circular heads 20 of standards 21. These heads have circular slots 22 through Which are passed clamping bolts 23 threaded into the posts 14. As a consequence the standards may be turned to different po sitio-ns and held therein by tightening the clamping bolts. On the upper or free ends of the standards 21 are pivoted the side rails 24 of a body rest frame connected bycross angle bars 25. Arcuate slotted strips 26, fastened to the side rails 24, slidably traverse the standards 21 and are adapted to be engaged and held by clamping bolts 27 pass ing through the slots into said standards. The angle bars constitute holders for the bottom of the body rest. This bottom preferably Gemiste 0f febl 28 QQIlIlGGtQd at its vdilierent positions over the same.
1924. Serial No. 721.456.
upper and lower margins'by springs 29 to the angle bars 25.
Standards 30 have eyes 31 slidably mounted on the side rails 7 of the bodyframe and adapted to be held by suitable set screws 32.
Pivoted to the upper ends of the standards` v38 and 39, is pivoted as shown at 40 to the upper section 34 of the leg rest and also has a pivotal connection 41 with the lower portion of the standard. The slidably associated sections can be held by a set screw 42.
The side rails 7 of the body frame extend beyond thek legs 10, and mounted on the projecting ends, are substantially U-shaped frames 43 having overhead cross bars 44 arranged transversely of the bed. Supporting bars 45, extending longitudinally above the bed, are provided With terminal eyes 46 that are slidably mounted on the cross bars 44. On the post of one of the frames 43 is rotatably mounted a bracket composed of pivotally connected arms 45, the bracket carrying at its free end a rotatable table 46. The bracket is adjustably supported by resting on a collar 47 on the post, said collar in turn being held by a set screw 48.
With this construction, it Will be evident that the fabric bed bottom 17 can be arranged as slack or as tight as desired, and that the body` rest 24-29 can be adjusted to The leg rest also can be adjusted to different angles and can be placed at dierent distances from the body rest. The overhead rods or bars 45 constitute convenient means from Which straps and hangers may be suspended, these bars being readily adjustable to different positions above the bed.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to` those skilled in the art, Without further description, and it Will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction, may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention,
Vliat l claim, is
The combination with a bed frame having side rails, of standards slidably mounted on the side rails, a rest member comprising piv- 5 otally connected upper and lower sections,
the lower section being pivoted to the standards, means for securing the lower section against pivotal movement, extensible braces pivoted to the standards and to the upper section, and means for securing the eXtensil0 ble braces against extension and. contraction. In testimony whereof, I aix my signature.
JOHN HENRY COOK.
