PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HIDI, OF GARWOOID, NEW JERSEY.
TABLE ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS. 7
Application filed August 21,1924. Serial No. 733,367.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HIDI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garwood, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table Attachments for Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in table attachments for beds wherein pivotally connected bracket arms mounted upon the corner post of a bed support a table top in a manner to permit the same to be disposed above the bed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a table attachment for beds wherein the table top or platform is adjustably mounted longitudinally of a supporting bracket arm for varying the positions thereof relative to the bracket arm to better accommodate the disposition of the table top relative to a person in the bed.
Vith the above general objects in view and others that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In, the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the table attachment for beds constructed in accord ance with the present invention, a portion of the bed frame being illustrated,
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same,
Figure 3 is an edge elevational view of the table attachment and a. portion of the bedstead with the table attachment in its folded inoperative position,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the table top,
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig. 1 showing the adjust-able mounting for the table top upon the bracket supporting arm,
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view taken on line VIVI of Fig. 5,
Figure 7 is a fragmentary side elevational View, partly in section showing the pivotal mounting for the main bracket supporting arm of the table attachment, and
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view showing the tensioned latch pin connection between the pivoted ends of the supporting bracket arm.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a table attachment for beds wherein a bracket arm 1 is pivotally mounted as at 2between the side straps of the clamping bracket 3 that is mounted upon the corner post 4 of a bedstead. The pivotal mounting of the bracket arm 1 is shown in detail in Fig. 7, the upper inner edge thereof being cut away between the side strap portions of the clamping bracket to form a socket 5 that receives the cross pin 6 extending between the opposite sides of the clamping bracket, the pin 6 retaining the bracket arm 1 in a horizontal position when the same is lowered as illustrated.
table top supporting bracket arm 7 is pivotally connected by the pin 8 to the outer end of the bracket arm 1 as shown in Figs. 1 and 8 and to retain the bracket arm 7 in adjusted position relative to the bracket arm 1 against accidental movements, the pin 9 spring pressed as at 10 and carried by the bracket arm 1 is provided for selective reccption in the circular series of depressions 11 formed in the opposed contacting face of the bracket arm 7. The two bracket arms are preferably of rectangular configuration in cross-section, and the free end of the bracket a-rn'i 7 is of cylindricalformation as at 12 and shown in Figs. 5 and 6 with the cylindrical end thereof provided with a longitudinal socket and internally threaded at 13.
The table top 14 is provided with depending spaced ribs 15, 16 and 17 the end rib 15 flatly engaging the upper face of the bracket arm 7 while the depending rib 16 is provided with an opening 18 to permit free passage of the cylindrical end 12 of the bracket arm 7. An adjusting screw 19 has a plain portion that is rotatable in the opening 20 in the depending rib 17 and is retained against longitudinal shifting movement relative to the rib and table top by the securing collars 21 shown in Fig. 5. The outer end of the screw 19 is provided with a finger piece 22 while the screw rod is threaded into the socket 13 of the bracket arm 7 From the above detail description of the device, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, it being); noted that by adjusting the screw 1.), the table top 14 may be shifted longitudinally of the bracket arm 7 to more conveniently position the same relative to a person in the bed while further adjustments of the table top are accomplished by the pivotal connection between the bracket arms 1 and 7. When the table attachment is out of use as illust ated in Fig. 3, the same is folded to assume an upright position adjacentthe corner post of the bed,- and when the sameis lowered to its operative position, the notch portion 5 of the bracket arm 1 will receive the pin 6. 1
While there is herein shown and described the. preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without dcpartingfrom the spirit and scope oi the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is:-
1. In a table attachment for beds, a pair of bracket arms pivoted together at their ends, movement arresting. means for the pivotal connection,- a clamping bracket sec-nredi to the bed, a pivotal connection betweenthe free end of one bracket arm and the clamping. bracket, a table top slidably monntedon. the free endot' the other bracket arm, manually operable means for shifting the table top on the bracket arm, and a stop pin carried by the clamping. bracket adapted to be engaged by the bracket arm pivoted therein for holding" the bracket arm in horizontal position.
2. In a table attachment "for beds, a pair of bracket arms pivoted together at their ends, movement arresting; means for the pivotal connection, a clamping bracket secured to the bed. apivotal connection between the free end of one bracket arm and the clamping bracket, a table top slidably mounted. on the free end oi the other bracket arm, a screw swivelled to the table top and threaded intothe associated bracket arm for shifting the table top thereon, and a stop pin carried by the clamping bracket adapted to be engaged ly the bracket arm pivoted therein for holding; the bracket arm in horizontal position.
3. In a table attachment for beds, a pair ot' bracket arms pivoted together at their ends, movement arresting means for the pivotal connection, a clamping' bracket secured to the bed, a pivotal connection between the tree end of one bracket arm and the clamping bracket, a table top slid-ably mounted on the free end of the-other bracket arm, and manually operable means tor shitting: the table top on the bracket arm, the mounting of the table top further including a depending apertured rib sl'dable on the bracket arm.
In testimony whereof I athx my signature.
