FOLDING BED.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Application ledFebruary 3, 1920. Serial No. 356,001.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN HAIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Columbia .and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification. l
ThisV invention relates to improvements in folding beds. l An important object of the invention is to provide a folding bed which may be 'quickly and easily placed in the folded position.-
vA further object of the invention is'to provide a folding bed which may be readily taken apart for storage or shipment.
Other objects and advantages Will be apparent during the coursel of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designat like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a plan View of a bed embodying my invention'.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in the extended position.
Fig. 1 3 is a similar view of the same in the folded position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the side rail supporting members and associated elements.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of' the same showing a portion of one of the side rails in the extended position, parts being shown in section for the purpose of illustration.
Fig. 6 is a similar view showingthe side rail in the position it assumes when the bed is folded, and
Fig. 7 is a`perspective vof the hinged portion of one of the side rails.
In the drawings, wherein for'the purpose of' illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1() designates the head piece of a bed and 11 the foot piece thereof. The head piece 10l and footpiece 11 are provided with the usual supporting legs 12. Spring supporting rails 13 are provided at each end of the bed-having the usual wire spring 14 secured thereto.
Each of the legs 12 is provided with side rail supporting members 15, extending in- Y wardly of the legs 12 for a substantial Vdistance and provided lin their free ends with openings 16, having an inner wall 17. A. bridge piece 18 extends across the opening -16, spaced from the wall 17 providing -a substantially vertical and circular opening 19 for a purpose to be described.
Side rails 20 are mounted on opposite sides of the bed and embody sections 2l and 22. The inner ends of the ysections 21 and 22 ofthe side 4rails are provided with enlarged heads 23. "The heads 23 are preferably provided with fiat inner faces adapted to receive the sections of a hinge 24, which maybe secured thereto by any suitable means, such as screws or the like. The hinge 24 is provided with a hinge pin 25 extending inwardly beyond the hinge having its inner end terminating in a hook 26 for a purpose to be described. The outer ends of the side rails terminate in down turned ends 27, adapted to be inserted within the/openings 19 of the side rail supporting members 15. The ends 27 are preferably arcuate in form and the bridge pieces Y18 are'preferably circular in cross section,
hence these two elements form in effect a hinged joint. Each of the sections 21 and 2 2 is Aprovided adjacent its downturned end with a flange 28 adapted to rest against the upper side of the member 15 and sup; port the side rail sections 21 and 22 when the bed is in the folded position.v As shown more clearly in Fig. 5 the down turned ends 27 of the side rails are provided with openings 29 adapted to receive the tongues 30 of bolts 31, slidably mounted upon the upper faces of the members 15 by means of pinsk 32 secured to the member 15 and operating in slots 33. Y
The operation of my device is as follows: In order to place the bed in the folded position, vas shown in Fig. 3, the inner ends of the rail sections 21'and 22 are raised somewhat and the foot piece 1.1" moved inwardly toward the head piece 10. When this action takes place the hook 26. of the hinge pin engages the outer -edge of and elevates the spring as shown in Fig. A3. The upward movement of the side rail sections also raises lthe inner ends of the mattress sections so that they assume the positions as the said sections occupy a posltion substantially parallel to and spaced from the head and foot pieces, providing spaces or pockets for the mattress sections, as shown. In
l"folding the bed the down turned ends 27 `by lifting upwardly.
of the side rails revolve about the bridge piece 18 until the flange 28 contacts the upper face of the supporting element 15. It will be notedthat in the folded position of the bed the rail vsections 21 and 22 assume vertical position, and there is thus -no tendency for these members to drop, unfolding the bed. l
In order to unfold the bed, it is only nec essary to pull the foot piece 11 or head piece l() outwardly, arid elevated parts of' the structure will drop and assume their normal position. The bolt 31 is then moved inwardly until the tongue 31 engages within the openin 29,v thus locking the parts in position. it is merely necessary to'disengagp 31, whereupon the side rails may the bolts e removed While the form of my invention herein shown andi` described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same it is to be understood that many changes in the size,"`shape and arrangement of parts'may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
W'hat I claim is :v y 1. A bed of the type described embodying head and foot pieces, side raill supporting members secured to and extending a substantial distance inwardly of.said head and foot pieces, said supporting members being provided with opening, and a pair ofhinged side rail sections, the free ends of said sections being provided with down turned ends adapted to beinserted within the openings in said side rail supporting member.
2. A bed of the type.described embodying head and foot pieces, side railA supporting members secured -to and extending a sub. stantial distance inward] of said head and foot pieces, said supporting members being provided with openings and having a substantially circular bridge piece closing the outer end of said opening and a pair of hinged side rail sections, the free ends 4of said sections bein provided with 'arcuate extensions adapted to be inserted within the openings of said side rail supporting members. 4 Q- 3. A bed of the type described embodying n order to take the bed apart,
' Witnesses:
head and foot pieces, and a spring, side rail supporting members secured to and extending a substantial distance inwardly of said head land foot pieces, said supporting members being provided with openings and havinga substantially circular bridge piece closing the outer ends of said openings, a pair of side rail sections, the outer ends of said sections being provided with arcuate extensions adapted to be inserted within the openings of said side rail supporting members, and a hinge including a hinge pin connecting the' inner ends of said pair of side rails,l said hinge pin extending inwardly and terminating in a hook adapted to engage the spring of the bed lwhen the bed is moved to the folded position.
4. A bed of the type described embodying head and foot pieces,`side rail supporting members secured to and extending awsubstantial distance inwardly of said vheadland foot pieces, saidsupporting members being provided with openings, a pair ofhinged vside rail sections, the free endsof said sections being provided with down turned ends adapted to be inserted within the openings in said siderail supporting members, said side rail sections being provided adjacent their free ends with openings, and a bolt slidably mounted upon said supporting members and having a tongue adapted to move into the openings in said side rail sections.
` A bed of the type described embodying head and foot pieces, side rail supporting members secured to said head and foot pieces, said supporting members being provided with. openings, and side rail sections REUBEN HAIGHT.
