RULE AND TOOL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application filed January 9, 1919. Serial No. 270,331.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HJALMER HANSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rule and Tool Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rule and tool holders, and particularly to devices for holding rules or tools in the pockets of workmen so that danger of them falling out, when the workmen stoop over, is eliminated.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character whereby the rule or tool can be placed in the pocket of the workman with the assurance that said rule or tool will not fall out.
Another object is to provide a novel and improved device which is adapted to be engaged in the pocket of the workmans trousers in such a manner that when the rule or tool is slipped through the device, and into the pocket, the same will be held firmly.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device in engagement with a folded rule.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 8 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device, removed from the rule, and taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4e-4c of Fig. 1, the rule being removed.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank. from which the front or pocket engaging metal plate is formed' Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, the device includes a wire frame A, and the metal plates B and C. The wire frame is formed from a single length of suitable spring wire, having the intermediate portions of its longer sides formed into a plurality of spring coils 10, the oppositely extending leg portions 11 being connected at their outer ends by the transverse members 12. A metal plate B is disposed to cover the space which is bounded by the legs and transverse member 12, at one side of the coils, and has its sides and one end rolled around said legs and member 12. A second plate G has its sides rolled around the legs at the other side of the coils and one end rolled around the transverse member connecting. said legs. The other end of this plate 13, which is disposed between the coils, is turned outwardly, as shown at 13, and is disposed against the inner wall of the workmans pocket, next to his body. The upper end ofthe plate C is turned downwardly to form the hook 14 which is engaged with the upper edge of the outer wall of the pocket, and whereby the device is firmly held within the pocket. The legs, and transverse members, under the influence of the coils, are normally urged toward each other, whereby when the rule is pushed downwardly between the parts of the device, the plates will be engaged by the end of the rule and bespread apart. The tension of the jaws, formed by the legs and transverse members, is suflicient to grip the rule tight enough to hold the rule in the pocket, and not only prevent accidental falling out, but tight enough to require the expenditure of slight force to withdraw the rule.
What is claimed is:
An article holder comprising a wire frame consisting of a pair of mutually engaging loops having their end portions, at one end, connected by coil turns, said coils being ar ranged in parallel relation, and plates having their marginal edge portions secured around the said loops, one of the plates having one end lying between the coils and formed witha hook.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HJALMER HANSON.
