Application filedflovemberzB, 1919.;nSerial No. 335,340J
To aZLQJzILQmamayconcern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. ANDRE- snN, a citizen of Germany, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curling Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to hair curling devices, and has for its object to provide a hair curler of the clamping jaw type which may be more conveniently handled than such devices as heretofore made.
It is the aim of this invention to provide a separate and distinct curl-holding member to which the clamping jaws are pivoted or hinged and from which said jaws may be swungback so as to in no way interfere with the wrapping of the hair upon or about said intermediate curl-holding member. Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a plan view of one embodiment of the invention, showing the clampli)ng jaws closed upon the curl-holding mem- Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said device with the clamping jaws swung back away from the curl-holding member, as when the hair is to be wound about said member.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the. device showing how it is held in the hand when latching or unlatching the clamping jaws, the hand being indicated in broken lines.
Fig. 4 is a plan View of a modified form of the device.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same in closed position, and
Fig. 6 is a erspective view of said modified form of t e invention in open position.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, 1 designates the curl-holding member which in this instance comprises a wire loop to one end of which there are se. cured diverging transverse pieces 2 and 3 as by solder 4. To each of said transverse Patented MaLBO,1920.,
adapted to swing into either of the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Said clamping jaws are designated 5 and 6, respectively and are shown as made of solid strips of resilient or spring metal. \Vhen closed or folded upon the hair-holding member 1, said jaws 5 and 6 extend slightly beyond the free end of said member. For holding the aws in this closed osition a latching loop 7 is hinged to the rec end of one jaw, and the free end of the other jaw is bent slightly outward so as to retain the loop in engagement therewith, as will be readily understood from Figs. 1 and 3. The solid jaws are also preferably made narrower than the hair-holding loop 1 so that the curl of hair 8, when wound upon said loop as shown in Fig. 3, will be pressed directly between the aws.
When the hair is to be wound upon the 1 member 1, the jaws 5 and 6 are swung back to the position shown in Fig. 2 where they are entirely out of the way and do not interfere in any way with the winding of'the hair about said member. After the hair-is in place on the holding member 1, the jaws are swung to closed position, Fi 3, and the free ends thereof pressed toget er between the thumb and finger while the latching loop 7 is slipped over the bent end 9 of the upper jaw. The tension in the jaws, which are bowed over the hair, will hold the latch in position.
Referring now to Figs. 4, 5 and 6, in this modified form of the invention the hairholding member 10 is made of a solid strip of metal while the clamping jaws 11 and 12 are made of looped wire of slightly greater length and width than said member 10. The jaw loops are hinged to one end of the member 10 at 13, and the free ends of said jaws are adapted to be fastened together by a latch 14 hinged to one jaw and having a hook 15 to engage the end of the other jaw, there being a bent finger piece on the free end of the latch, as at 16, for raising it from its closed position, Figs. 4 and 5, in which it rests on the upper surface of the hair holding member. The modified form of the device is used in the same way as illustrated in Fig. 3. 5
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is .1. In a hair curling device, the combination with a curl-holding member having larly bent latch hinged to the free end of rigid transverse pieces extending above and one jaw and adapted to extend across the below the same at one end, of clamping jaws end of the curl holding member and engage hinged respectively to said transverse pieces the free end of the other jaw for retaining 5 and adapted to embrace said member. said jaws in position to embrace said mem- 15 2.
