1 Claim. (Cl. 132-41) This invention relates to hair curlers.

An object of this invention is to provide a hair curler embodying a cylindrical body about which the hair is adapted to be wound, and means projecting from one end of the body for anchoring or securing the same on the head.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hair curler including a body about which the hair is adapted to be wound with clamping means for initially clamping the ends of the hair to the body, and spring-pressed anchoring fingers projecting laterally of one end of the body for engagement with the hair closely adjacent to the head to thereby secure the curler to the head and hold the same against unwinding.

A further object of this invention is to provide a hair curler embodying a cylindrical curler body with springpressed anchoring fingers projecting from one end of the body, an operator for each finger, and a winder element adapted to removably engage the operators for the fingers so as to hold the fingers in retracted condition during the winding operation.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings and first to Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, the numeral 10 designates generally a cylindrical curler body which is open at each end and is formed with a plurality of spaced openings 13. The curler body 10 has pivotally mounted therethrough a pair of finger carrying levers 11 and 12 which are rockably mounted on a pivot member 14 extending transversely across one end of the curler body 10, as shown in Figure 6. The opposite ends of the pivot member 14 are bent reversely to form securing eyes 15.

2,741,249 Patented Apr. 10, 1956 The levers 11 and 12 have extending from the forward ends thereof obliquely disposed anchoring fingers 16 and 17 respectively which are adapted to engage through slots 18 and 19 formed in the body 10. A lever 11 has extending from the rear end thereof an operator or handle 20, and a lever 12 has extending from the rear end thereof an operator or handle 21. A spring 22 engaging about the pivot member 14 provides for normally urging the levers 11 and 12 to swing laterally at their forward ends to hold the fingers 16 and 17 in extended operative and anchoring position.

In order to provide a means whereby the curler body 10 may be readily turned so as to wind the hair thereupon, I have provided a winder generally designated as 23 which is detachably coupled with the rear end of the curler body 10. The winder member 23 is formed of a body 24 having a slot 25 in its forward end extending diametrically across the body 24 and within which the operators 20 and 21 are adapted to be disposed, as shown in Figure 2.

The body 24 is engageable within the rear end of curler member 10, and at this time, the operators 2!) and 21 will be disposed in substantially parallel relation with the levers 11 and 12 in retracted position. A knurled knob 26 is connected with the body 24 by means of a shank 27. When the hair is initially engaged with the curler body 10, the end of the strand which is to be wound on the curler 10 is clamped thereto by means of a spring pressed clamping member 28, which is pivotally carried, as at 29, on the body 24.

Referring now to Figures 7, 8 and 9, there is disclosed a modified form of this invention embodying a cylindrical curling body 10a, similar in every detail to the body 10, which has pivotally mounted therein a pair of spring pressed levers 11a and 12a. The levers 11a and 12a have extending from the forward ends thereof obliquely disposed anchoring fingers 16a and 17a, and the levers 11a and 12a have extending from the rear ends thereof operators 20a and 21a. A hair strand clamping jaw or member 30 is pivotally mounted on a pivot 31, which is a common pivot for the levers 11a and 12a, and obtusely disposed handle or operator 32 extends from the rear end of the clamping member 30.

In the use and operation of the curler structure, the winder 23 is initially extended into the curler member 10 in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, whereby the anchoring fingers 16 and 17 will be disposed in retracted or inoperative position. The end of the hair strand is clamped to the periphery of the curler member 10 by the clamping jaw or member 28, whereupon the curler 10 is rotated so as to wind the hair strand thereupon. When the strand of hair is substantially entirely wound on the curler member 10 so that this member will be disposed closely adjacent the head, curler member 10 is turned so as to be substantially perpendicular to the head, and at this time, the winder member 23 is removed from the curler member 16. Upon removal of the winder member 23 from the curler member 10, the spring pressed levers 11 and 12 will swing laterally at their forward ends so as to dispose the anchoring fingers 16 and 17 in the extended position shown in Fig ure 4. These anchoring fingers 16 and 17 are adapted to engage the air at a point closely adjacent the head so that the curler member 10 will be held by the anchoring members 16 and 17 against unwinding.

The modified form of this invention shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9 is operated similar to the structure shown in Figures 1 to 6 inclusive. In this embodiment the hair strand is placed over the periphery of the curler member 10a and the operator then applies finger pressure either directly on the clamping jaw 30 or against the handle 32 to clamp the strand of hair between the member 10a and the jaw 30. Thereafter, the curler is rotated and operated as described above, with the exception that the hair clamping member 30 is retained at all times on the curler body 10a.

I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling Within the purview of the appended claim.

What is cla'u'ned is:

A hair curler comprising a cylindrical member open at each end and having diametrically opposed cutout portions at one end thereof, a pair of levers disposed in said member and extending lengthwise thereof, a common pivot extending through said members and mounting bothof said levers for pivotal movement about an axis transverse to said cylindrical member, an obliquely disposed anchoring finger at one end of each lever adapted to project laterally through a said cutout portion, an opdrical member.
