4 Claims.

This invention relates to hair dressing and has Y special reference to a permanent wave curler.

One important object of the invention' is to provide a novely device of this kind having improvedmeans for grasping a tress of hair.

A second important object of this invention is to provide an improved curl forming device for such a curler.

A third important object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement oi' tress grasping device or clamp and'curler arranged for detachable interlocking engagement, after the hair has been wound on the rod.

With the above and other objects in view, the inventionA consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompany drawing, and specifically claimed.

In the embodiment of the invention here disclosed there is provided a base member or tress,

clamp which consists of 'upper and lower 'plates Iii preferably made of aluminum or other light metal which are each provided with a notch Ii extending inwardly from one edge to about the center of the plate. At the opposite sides from the notches these plates are held in proper spaced 50 relation by a spacer I2 which is preferably made of bakelite or other similar material. 'I'his spacer extends to the inner ends of the notches and the edge at these notches is provided with a padding I I3 of felt or the like. The notches II bifurcate 55 the plates I0 and between the arms of the bifur- 1934, Serial No. 717,517 (Cl. 132-33) cations at one side of said notches there is pivoted one end of a clamp plate I4 having its inner edge provided with a padding I 5 similar to the padding I3. The other or free end of this clamp member I4 slides in and out between the bifurcations on 5 the remaining side of the notches. The free end of the clamp member I4 is provided with a slot I6 wherein is pivoted one end of a link I'I which can swing in and out of this slot and, when the clamp is closed, in and out of a similar slot in the corresponding end of the spacer I2 and when the clamp is closed and the link I'I in the slots the free end of this link projects beyond the rear edge of the spacer I2.` To the free end of the link I'I there is pivoted a cam I8 having an operating 10 handle or linger piece I9. As shown best ln Figure 5, the clamp I4 may be opened by swinging the handle I9 from its full line position in that gure in a clockwise direction, then swinging the link Il in a similar direction and finally swinging the clamp I4 to open the notches, the parts being shown in full line position in that figure and partly open in broken lines. The underside of this base is provided with a felt pad 20 and in this base is provided a circular opening 2I located adjacent the inner ends of the notches II and across this opening extends a bar or key 22.

In connection with this base, certain winding mechanism is used. which consists of a cylindrical rod 23 whereon is mounted, for rotation, a sleeve 24, the said rod being of greater diameter at one end, to provide a head 23m, and having im other end reduced and screw-threaded as shown at 23h to receive a wing nut 25. One end of the sleeve 24 rests upon the shoulder formed by the inner end of the head 23a. and its other end is adapted to be engaged by the wing nut 25, whereby it may be clamped against rotation, between said nut and head. To the upper end portion of this sleeve 2t is pivoted a clamping finger 26 of arcuate crosssection and, when in normal position, this nger extends down alongside of the sleeve and partly encircling the same. The head 23a is of a size to lit within the opening ZI and its outer end face is provided with a groove 2'I, to receive the crossbar or key 22. The upper end of the sleeve 24 is provided with a suitable nger grip here shown in the form of a butterfly nut, although any form oi' linger grip that may be found desirable may be used.

There is also provided, for use with this invention, .the usual wrappers or flannels 29 and a perforated covering tube 30. Those skilled in the art will understand that such annel wrappers are generally moistened with water or a suitable setting liquid before application. On the lower end of the covering tube 30 there is provided an oppositely disposed pair o1' locking hooks 3| adapted to engage, by twisting movement of the tube, a pair of headed studs 32 projecting upwardlypfrom the base.

In using this invention the operator separates a tress of hair covering about one square inch from the remainder of the hair on the scalp. The base clamp is opened and this tress is inserted in the notches Il after which the base clamp is closed, the base being pushed down close to the scalp. The rod, with the nut 25 loosened, is now taken and its clamping nger 26 opened so that the free end of the tress may be inserted between the sleeve 24 and said clamping nger close to the joint of the latter. Upon depressing the clamping iinger and holding it thus, the end of the tress is gripped rmly between the finger and sleeve. The sleeve 24 is now rotated to wind the tress from tip to close to the clamp onto the sleeve, the windings Wrapping around the clamping nger to hold it in position to clamp the tip of the tress. When all of the tress above the base has been wound in this manner the lower end of the head 23a is inserted in the opening 2l with the key 22 in the groove 21. The sleeve 24 is then rotated until any slack in the tress is wound tightly thereon, whereupon the nut 25 is tightened to clamp the sleeve between it and the inner side of the head 23a, thus holding the sleeve against rotation. The tight wrapping of the tress prevents dislodgement of the head 23a from the opening 2| of the base. The flannel wrapper is now placed around the rod and the hair wound thereon, and the perforated tube is slipped over the wrapper and turned to cause the hooks 3| to engage the studs 32. 'Ihe device is now ready for the application of the heater element which may be of any desired kind and which is not deemed necessary here to be shown as such heater elements are old and well-known and form no part of the present invention.

There has thus been provided a simple and efcient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

It is obvious that changes may be made in the form, proportions, and construction of the invention from what has herein been shown and described and that such changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. The invention is, therefore, not to be restricted to the exact form herein set forth but l is limited only by the scope as claimed.

What is claimed is:

1. A permanent wave device including a base having means for clamping a tress, a rod detachably connected to the base, a sleeve rotatably mounted on the rod, a tress clamp carried by the sleeve, and means carried 'by the rod for locking the sleeve to the rod at times.

2. A permanent wave device including a. base having means for clamping a tress, a rod detachably connected to the base, a shoulder on the 'rod, a sleeve loosely encircling the rod with an end engaging said shoulder, means for clamping the sleeve against the shoulder to prevent rotation of said sleeve and a tress clamp carried by the sleeve.

3. A permanent wave device including a base having means for clamping a tress, a rod removably mounted in the base, a shoulder on the,

rod, a sleeve loosely encircling the rod with an end engaging said shoulder, a nut threaded on the rod and adapted to engage the other end of the sleeve, and a tress clamp carried by the sleeve.

4. A permanent wave device including a base member provided with a tress clamp, a rod having a grooved end, said base member having an opening therein to receive the grooved end of the rod, a bar extending across said opening to be engaged in said groove whereby to hold the rod against rotation, a sleeve loosely encircling the rod, means for clamping the sleeve to the rod, and a tress clamp carried by the sleeve.
