Description
W. BRANCH & M. J. LIDDELL.
Sash-Holders.
N0. 133,352. Patented Nov 16,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
WILLIAM BRANCH AND MARK J. LIDDELL, OFLAINGSBURG, MICHIGAN.
lMPROv EMENT m SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,352, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM BRANCH and M ARK J. LIDDELL, of Lain gsburg, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specifica-tion:
The object of this invention is to furnish convenient and efficient means for. holding window-sashes in any desired position when raised, and for fastening them securely down when closed; and it consists in'a weighted lever with a double cam attached thereto, one of which cams being arranged to hold the sash up and the other to hold it down, the combination and arrangement being as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, showing the sash and the casing with my holder attached, a portion of the casing being broken away. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the sash. B is the casing. G represents the sash-holder, consisting of the lever D with the branch E and the cams F and G connected thereunto. The cam F is attached to the branch E by means of a pivot, the cam having a projecting arm, H, through which the pivot passes, as seen in the drawing. The cams are oval in form, and project from the face or front of the lever and of the arm H. For
the-purpose of rendering these cams more adhesive and increasing the friction I surround them with a ring or band of rubber, or other elastic material, I. The holder is attached to the sash by means of the pivot-screw J, which is the fulcrum of the lever. As seen in the drawing, the sash is fastened down, the upper cam F being in contact with the casing.
When it is desired to raise the sash the cam If is thrown over to the position seen in dotted lines. The sash may now be raised without obstruction, but the weighted end J of the lever will press the cam against the casin g, the moment the sash is released, with sufficient force to hold the sash in any desired position. The cam G holds the sash up, and the cam F holds and securely fastens it down.
The sash-holder maybe made of any metal. It is cast in two pieces, with the elastic bands I placed on the cams. It is simple in construction, inexpensive, and most elficient in operation.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A sash-holder, composed of the weighted lever D, branch E, pivoted arm H, cams F and G, and elastic bands I, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM BRANCH. MARK J. LIDDELL.
