BENJAMIN F. BOWEN, OF WAYNE, WEST VIRGINIA.
SECURING APPLIANCE FOR WINDOW-SASH.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Application filed October 27, 1910.
Patented Aug. 27, 1912.
Serial No. 589,359.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. BOWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wayne, in the county of Wayne and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Appliances for VVindow-Sash; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a securing applance for window sash and my object is to provide a reliably eflicient locking appliance which may be instantly applied to its operative position and quickly removed when not further required.
A further object of my invention is to provide easily portable means which may readily be carried as in the pocket, thus serving the requirements of travelers who may desire to reliably lock a window sash in position while they are occupying the room.
A further object of my invention among others is to provide means for not only locking the sash in any adjusted or preferred position, but my device will also be found efficient in preventing rattling of the sash as when the latter is poorly fitted or old and worn.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which, Figure 1 shows my locking appliance as applied to use upon an ordinary window sash, a contiguous portion of the frame or casing and the sash being broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the hinge members. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the complete device in a folded position. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central sectional view of a part of Fig. 2 on line 4-t, and, Fig. 5 is an end view of the pivoted end of the lock.
For convenience of reference to the various details of my invention and cooperating accessories, numerals will be employed, and referring in detail to the drawings, 1 and 2 show complementary members of my window locking appliance designed to render any window burglar proof, said members being hinged together, as indicated by the numeral 3, whereby they may be folded against each other when not in use. The free end of each of the members 1 and 2 is bent so as to provide the angular terminal 4, said terminal serving as a convenient form of handle.
. Anchoring points lat are integral with the hinge members or, in other words, are struck up therefrom and properly shaped and sharp ened so that they may be of proper size to enter the apertures 6 formed in the window frame or may be caused to force their own way into a contiguous part of the sash and frame without the necessity of boring the apertures 6 in advance.
It will be noted that I have so formed the hinge section as to provide the tongue 7, which is preferably formed as an integral part of the hinge member which is disposed in engagement with the sash, the ofiice performed by said tongue extension 7 being to engage with a contiguous part of the sash and act as a key or lever in throwing forward or upward as the case may be, the hinge member carrying said lever extension 7 thereby forcing the hinge member into a posit-ion parallel with the sash and causing the anchoring points carried thereby to enter the apertures provided for their reception.
It will be observed that the lever extension 7 acts in such a way as to throw the member carrying the same in a position at right angles to its complementary member.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a reliable form of locking appliance for window sash which will enable the sash to be locked at any adjusted point, thereby making it possible to adjust the sash so as to afford the desired degree of ventilation and when my locking appliance has thus been disposed, it will furthermore be apparent that it will be practically impossible to dislodge my locking appliance by any person outside of the window, thus rendering the window burglar proof, even though the sash be locked in a partly opened position.
I desire also to call attention to the fact that by properly locking the apertures 6 in the sash to be locked, the said sash will be held by my locking appliance against all rattling as when the sash is shrunken by age or use.
Believing that the advantages and the manner of using my appliance have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary.
I/Vhat I claim is:
An article of manufacture consisting of a sash lock having a pair of members pivotally connected together at their adjacent ends, one of said members being provided with a tongue extension upon its pivoted end, said tongue extension being disposed in alinement with that member and terminating upon the opposite side of the pivotal point of said member, each member being formed with laterally disposed tongue extensions struck out of the body portions, the tongue extensions of one member being adapted to enter spaced openings in a sash and the tongue extensions of the other member being adapted to enter spaced openings in a Window frame to hold the sash against movement therein in the direction toward the end on which said lock is placed. 1 V
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. BOWEN.
