DOOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1913.
Application filed January 27, 1913. Serial No. 744,461.
T 0 all whom it may concern. Y
Be it known that I, GEORGE KIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somonauk, in the county of Dekalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawm lhis invention relates to door locks and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient detachable door securer or look which may be attached to a door in such a manner as to prevent the same fromb'e' coming detached therefrom from the outside.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient device which is formed from a blank sheet of material and is so constructed as to acommodate itself to doors which have swollen or shrunken under conditions of the atmosphere.
With these and other objects in view, th1s invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the device showing the same applied to a door fitting somewhat snugly upon the jamb. Fig. 2 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 1 showing the device applied to a door which does not fit closely in engagement with the j amb. Fig. 3 1s a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a door fitting snugly in engagement with the j amb. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the door securer.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates the door to which the securer is attached for firmly holding the door in a closed position relative to the jamb 2.
The door securer comprises a primary section 3 and an auxiliary section 4. The primary section 3 comprises an elongated spring sheet metal body which has its outer end bent upwardly as indicated at 5, so as to constitute a knob 6 for engaging the auxiliary section 4. The extreme end of the primary section 3 terminates in a rightangularly extending door engaging point 7 for firmly securing the primary section in engagement with the door. This point 7 tapers toward its outer end so as to facilitate the securing of the primary section in en gagement with the edge of the door. The primary section 3 is provided with a plurality of spaced apertures 8 for the purpose of receiving the cotter pin 9 which cotter pin is adapted to pass through the aperture 10 formed in the auxiliary section 4 for anchoring the two sections 3 and 4- together. i
The auxiliary section 4 comprises an elongated body, and, like the primary section 3, isprovided with an outwardly bent end 11 for constituting a shoulder to be engaged by the knob 6 of the primary section when it is so desired to accommodate the device to a different kind of door. The outer end of the auxiliary section 4 is bent at right angles to the body to constitute a jamb engaging finger 12 as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4:, and this jamb engaging finger is adapted to lie flat against the jamb to firmly hold the auxiliary section and primary section in their correct positions. An adjusting band 13 is slidably mounted upon the primary sections 3 and 4 and this adjusting band slides over the outer ends 14 of the primary and auxiliary sections for firmly holding the sections against pivotal movement relative to each other. This band will also efliciently reinforce the two sections of the securer so as to add additional spring action to the sections by binding the outer ends closely inengagement with each other and causing the lower ends to also closely engage each other thereby having the body of the primary section bulging outwardly as indicated clearly in Fig. 1.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a very simple and eflicient device has been produced whereby the door securer will accommodate itself to different width spaces between the door and jamb, thereby allowing the device to be attached to doors which have become worn as well as doors which have been recently hung. It is a well known fact that where doors are first put up in new houses, the space between the j amb and the edge of the door is very small and in such a case the device is applied to the door and jamb, as indicated in Fig. 3. When, however, the door is old and has been in use for some time the same generally shrinks and wears along its edge so as to enlarge the space between the jamb and the door itself. The securer may, therefore, expand itself, owing to its spring action, to the position as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby accommodating itself to difierent conditions under which it has to act.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is 2- A door securer of the class described comprising a primary and an auxiliary section, a connecting loop positioned upon the outer end of said sections for holding the same together, each section provided with a plurality of spaced apertures, each section comprising a spring body, said primary section provided with an outwardly bent end terminating in a knob and provided with a right angularly extending door gripping point, said auxiliary section comprising an outwardly bent end terminating in a right angularly extending jamb engaging lip eX- tending in an opposite direction to the point of said primary section, said outwardly bent portions of said primary and auxiliary sections adapted to exert an outward pressure upon the body of said sections for causing the body of said sections to accommodate itself to different width spaces, said outwardly inclined portions abutting against each other for constituting a yieldable contact and facilitating the compression of one section upon the other, and means passing through said apertures in said primary and auxiliary sections for securing the same together.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE KIEHL.
