n Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24; 1920.
Application led February; 12, 1918. Serial No. 216,686.
To all whom t may Concern:
Be it known that I, E BLAKE SHAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful mprovement in Removable Window-Stops and Securing Means Therefor, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertams to make and use the same, reference being had to the acompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to removable window stops and securing means therefor. The principal object ofthe invention 1s a removable stop adapted to hold the window sash in position in the window frame, the stop being formed of three hinged portions adapted to be folded to allow the sash members to be swung into the room about a horizontal axis. An additional object of the invention is a stop that is readily removable or securely fixed in place. These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the window frame and sash showing a portion of the stop and securing means therefor.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the securing means showing the recess in the window frame for receiving the hook member. Fig. 3 is a face view of the stop and securing means.
The stop, as will be understood from the drawing, is formed of three parts 1, 2 and 13 hinged together at 3 and 12. The plates of the hinge 3 are L shaped in form, one part 4 being attached tothe upper part 1 and the part 5 being attached to the lower part 2. the hinge point 3 being on the inner side of the stop as will be understood from Fig. 2. The lower leaf 5 of the hinge member has pivotallv connected thereto a tongue 6 adapted to fold flatwise against the'stop as shown in Fig. 2. This tongue 6 carries a hook member 7 extending when 1n the position shown in Fig. 2 through a slot provided in the leaf 5 of the hinge and correspending slot formed in the part 2 of the stop. When the stop is in position shown in Fig. 2 and the tongue 6 in place as shown, thehook member 7 engages behind the staple 8 secured in the window frame, the frame being provided with a recess 9 to receive the hinge member 3, the hook member 7 and staple 8. To remove the stop, the part 6 is turned downward in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2 which withdraws the hook member from the staple 8, whereupon by pulling on the member 6 the parts 1 and 2 turn on the hinge point 3 to position shown by dotted lines 10 in Fig. 2 withdrawing the pin 14 in the end of the stop member 2 from engagement with the lower frame member as will be readily understood. The stop may then be swung up on the hinges 3 and 12 out of the way of the sash to allow the same to be swung into the room. Vhile I have not shown means for holding the stop in the folded position, a spring clip or the like may be used for the purpose at the upper end of the window frame.
The securing means and hinge member for the stop is inexpensive in form and readily applied to the lower two portions of the stop as illustrated. and the device is extremely simple in operation requiring only the simple movement of the part 6 and hook member about the pivot point thereof on the portion 5 of the hinge to release the stop for removal or to secure it in place.
Having thus briefly described my invention` its utilitv and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In combination with a window frame, a stop formed of several parts, a hinge member for two of said parts, the pivotal point thereof being on the inner side of the stop` one part of the said hinge member extending between the adjacent ends of the stop members and secured to the face of the stop, a plate in hinged relation with said part of the hinge member, a hook member carried by the plate, the stop and said part of the hinge member being, apertured to allow the hook member to pass therethrough, and means secured to the window frame and engaged by the hook member when turned to the locking position. 'l
2. A securing device for a removable stop formed of several parts, consisting of two L shaped plates adapted to be secured in hinged relation to the adjacent ends respectively of the two parts of the stop, the hinged point being on the inner side of the parte Off the Stop., a Plate hinged t0 011e 0f the L "sha peil Aplates adapted lto 'be "turned parallel With the face of the stop Vorturned outwardly therefrom, cured to the plate, the 5 part of thestop Ibeihg hook member to pass v-#she plate is v,turned :to i1 a thook :member seplate and companion .Slotted fto afllow 'the therethrough when oeking position, 'fund `and engaged by -the "stop imposition.
