Description

H. H. BIGELOW.
Wire for Riveting the Soles qfBoots and Shoes.
No. 133,191. Patented Nov.19,18 2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE H. BIGELOW, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIRES FOR RIVETING THE SO LES 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,191, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Homes 11. BIGELOW, of the city and county of Worcester and Commonwea-lth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in burred or ribbed wire for making pegs or rivets for fastening soles to boots and shoes and for other purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing-forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of a piece of my improved wire, and Figs. 2 and 3 represent similar views. a
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in detail.
In the drawing, Fig. 2 represents the burrs a when made upon the wire in parallel ridges, while Fig. 3 represents the burrs or ridges a parallel, but extending only half way around the wire, the other half of the wire being covered with similar ridges, only so made that they come opposite the parallel spaces or grooves b. In Fig. 1 a piece of wire is represented, one end of which is made as shown in Fig. 2, while the other end is made as shown in Fig. 3. The grooves 12 and ribs or are formed by passing the wire through concave rolls, the faces of which are provided with parallel grooves and parallel ridges or teeth. To make the wire with parallel grooves and burrs, as
shown in Fig. 2, the rolls are setso that their teeth will run opposite each other; while to form the grooves or burrs as shown in Fig. 3, the rolls are set so that the teeth of one roll will come opposite the grooves of the others. If desired to make the burrs very perfect, as shown in Fig. 2, two sets of rolls may be used, one set running at right angles with the other, for the purpose of displacing or removing any little burr that may be left in the grooves b by the first set of rolls at the line where the surfaces of the rolls meet. The burrs are made very fine upon the surface of the wire, and can be made very rapidly by means of the rolls, as above described, and pegs or rivets cut from said wire are peculiarly adapted for fastening the soles to boots and shoes.
Having described my improved burred wire for making pegs or rivets for fastening the soles to boots and shoes and for other purposes, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
Burred wire, as an improved article of manufacture, the burrs extending around the wire in the form of distinct and independent parallel ridges, in contradistinction to a continuous spiral ridge, as shown and described.
HORACE H. BIGELOW.
