ROLL FOR FORMING TOEGALYKS. No. 335.910. I Patented Feb. 9.1886

JOHN NV. FOULKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ROLL FOR FORMING TOE-CALKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 335,910, dated February 9, 18226.
Application filed December 5. 1885. Serial No. 184,819. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN W. FoULKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rolls for Forming T0e-Oalks,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the rolling of metal bars in the manufacture of horseshoe toe calks, and for other purposes.
111 the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of rolls adapted to form a bar of iron or steel with two plain rectangular sides, two oppositely-inclined surfaces, and a plain surface connecting said inclines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the finished bar with its inclined flange o-r rib on one edge.
In practicing my invention an ordinary bar of steel or iron is passed between the rolls A B, while said rolls are rotated by any suitable means. One of these rolls, as A, is formed with a plain periphery. The other roll, B, has a broad circumferential groove, a, consisting, essentially, of the conical frustums, of unequal diameters, arranged end to end on a com- H1011 axis and in reversed position. One of these conical frnstums, as b, is conterrninous with the plain periphery of the roll, while the other, as 0, is throughout of less diameter than the roll of which it forms a part. By
this construction a bar of metal passed between the rolls A B will have imparted to it the form shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the bar 0, as formed by the rolls A B, has two plain rectangular sides, two oppositely-inclined surfaces, and a plain surface connecting said inclined or beveled portions of the bar. The bar 0 is thus nearly rectangular in cross-section, and has an in clined rib or flange, (2, along one edge. It will be observed that the flange or rib cl is inclined or beveled on only one side, the other side being plain and continuous with one of the plain sides of the bar.
A bar, 0, formed as above described, may be used for various purposes.
In the manufacture of horseshoe toe-calks the bar 0 will be out to suitable lengths, and its flange d almost entirely cut away, except at one end, by means of a suitable punch and die, thereby forming an attaching-spur at the end or other desired point.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- The combination, with a plain-surfaced roll, A, of the roll B, having a broad circumferential groove, a, consisting of the conical frustums b c, of unequal diameters, and arranged end to end in reverse position, one of said frustu ms being conterminous with the plain periphery of the roll, while the other is throughout of less diameter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofl atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. FOULKS.
