DIE FOR MAKING ROLLED PORGINGS.
' No. 352,365. Patentd Nov'. 9. 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT "OFFICE.
GEORGE E. SIMONDS, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
DIE FOR MAKING ROLLED FORGINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,365, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed April 8, 1886. Serial No. 198,255. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SIMoNDs, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and Improved Dies for Use in Machines for Making Rolled Forgings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a die of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a section on line 00 x of Fig. 1. Fig'. 3 is a section on line y y of Fig. 1.
My invention relates to a device for making rolled-metal forgings circular in transverse "section, and is an improvement on the dies shown and described in Patents Nos. 319,7 54., 319,755, and 319,756, issued June 9, 1885; and myinvention consists in certain details of construction, as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claim, whereby the rotation of the work to be performed is more certain in the preliminary stages of the operation, especially with heavy work, than was obtained in the construction under the patents articlein this instance, for illustration, being a conical shot. At the initial point of the die-face,in instances of heavy work, the grooves or cross-hatches on the spreading faces do not absolutely insure the proper rotation of the article. To overcome this difficulty, and, furthermore, to steady the work, I leave the grooves or cross-hatches off that portion of the die-face d c, and near the outer edges of the platen insert removable bars hh, provided with heavy teeth 2" t", which embed themselves in the heated blank and force it to rotatesteadily and certainly.
From about a point opposite the ends of the bars h h the cross-hatching or grooves are made on the spreading faces, as described and.
claimed in the former patents set out, the diefaces having at this point obtained such a bearing and hold upon the blank as to insure its proper working.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y A die for making rolled forgings, having the portion d c of the forming and spreading surfaces smooth in contradistinction to serrated or toothed, in combination with serrated bars or plates h h, secured to the bed or supporting plate of the die, substantially in the manner set forth.
GEO. F. SIMONDS.
