Description

Pg SMITH.
CHECK HOLDER FOR RMLWAY CARS.
APPLICATION FILED MAH.2..\,1918\v Patented Feb 24;1920.
PERCY SMITH, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CHECK-HOLDER FOR RAILWAY-CARS Specification of Letters Patent.
i .dented Een. 24, 1920.
Appnct'm-n ined March 25, 191s. seriarun. 224,666.
To all whom t may concern:
Bejrt known that I, IEucY SMITH, a citizenof' the Dominion of Canada, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne, State ot Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ChecleHolders for Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make' and use the same.
The invention relates to a check holder', and more particularly to the class of ticket or check holders for use in railway cars.
The primary object of the invention is the provision ot' a check holder of this character, wherein the same is made, t'rom two parts, preferably sheet metal and 1s readily and easily assembled for use 1n supporting checks or tickets, the construction of the holder being novel in form to positively retain the tickets or .Checks placed therein and -to assure easy accessi-bility -t'or the removal ot' the tickets or checks therefrom.
Another object of the invention the provision ot a check holder of this character, which is extremely simple in coi'istruction possessing minimum parts, thorOughIy--reliable and elicient in its purpose, and economical and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features ot construction, combination a-nd arrangement ot parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying diawingz Figure l is a perspective view otl the holder constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the body of the holder is made.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the back or base of the holder.
Fig. fi is a perspective view of the body separated from the back or base and in its completed form.
Similar reference characters indicate co1'- responding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Having more particular reference to the drawing, the check holder comprises a body A and a back or base B both being hereinafter fully described.
The body A is preferably made from a flat blank ot' sheet metal cut to form the upper and lower intermediate portions 5 and 6 re spectively which constitute the front walls of the individual pockets 7 formed by the body A, the blank being further'cut to provide the side walls 8 ior said pockets 7 which are super-posed with relation to each other. The side walls 8 of the body A are formed with the outwardly curvededges 9 and the sections 5 and Gare united for a distance ot their length with the sides 8 which are foldable on the crease lines l0 indicated in the `blank shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, while the remaining portions of the sections 5 and (i are curved correspondingly to theI curved edges 9 so that the pockets 7 taper downwardly from the upper open ends thercotI and these sections 5 and (i are held in their curved formation in a manner presently described.
The backv or base B ot the holder comprises an elongated fiat plate 1l formed with reduced end ears 12 which are suitably perforated for receiving fasteners to attach the back or base of the holder upon a chair in a railway ear or on the side wall of said car. The sides 8 of the body A are formed at the straight free edges thereot1 with bendable tongues 13 which engage in suitable slots lJf formed in the plate 11 and are turned over against the rearmost face of the plate for the secure fastening of the body, A thereon. f
Cut and bent outwardly trom the plate 11 transversely thereof are lips or flanges 15 in which are engaged the lower ends 1G of the sections 5 and 6 constituting the front ot' the body A aud in this manner the bot? toms of the pockets 7 are closed.
Cut and stamped outwardly from the plate 1l lougitudmally thereof are out- 7ardly bowed lea't' springs 17 which play against the sect-ions 5 and 6 interiorly ot' the pockets 7 for rictionally holding tickets or checks when placed within the pockets, yet the said checks or tickets can be readily withdrawn through the open ends of the pockets when it is required to move the checks from thc holder.
The upper edges ot the sections 5 and G constituting the 'fronts of thc pockets are formed with medial notches 18 to enable a linger grip upon the tickets or checks when within the pockets. p
From thetoregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the holder '/Will be cleai'lynnderstood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 'As an article of manufacture a device for yieldably holding checks consisting of a spring metal plate having longitmtlhally spacedtongues struck therefrom and c0nnected therewith at their upper ends and a transverse lip below each tongue and a second plate comprising longitudinal side members in parallel spaced relation and longitudinally spaced central members connected .iis
