SHOPPING AID SHEET HOLDERS FOR PUSHCARTS Grady E. (Iarnpbeil, N. Mex, assign-or Application June 28, 1957, Serial No. 668,661

1 Claim. (Cl. 40-17) My invention relates to improvements in sheet holders ijinited States Patent for attachment to the handles of pushcarts such as are used in self-service stores and the like.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a holder for supporting a merchandise advertising sheet and a shoppers check list sheet in upright position on the handle of such a pushcart for easy reference and comparison of the check list sheet with information on the advertising sheet by a shopper pushing the cart from place to place in a store, and which is readily attachable to a handle of such a pushcart and is of simple inexpensive construction and durable.

To the accomplishment of the above and subordinate objects, presently appearing, my improved holder comprises a backing panel for the sheets having means for attaching the panel at a lower edge thereof to the handle in upright position, a rest bar at the lower edge of the panel for supporting the sheets, a retaining bar on the panel coacting with the rest bar to form a retaining pocket for the check list sheet, an envelope for positioning over the panel and the advertising sheet to separate the advertising sheet from a check list sheet, means for securing the envelope to the panel, and means coacting with the retaining bar to clamp the lower edges of the advertising and check list sheets, and a bottom edge of the envelope in the pocket to hold the sheets and envelope in flattened position, all as set forth in detail in the following description, defined in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved holder attached to the handle of a cart;

Figure 2 is an enlarged view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view on a smaller scale of the envelope, advertising sheet, and the panel and parts thereon;

Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective, exploded view of the panel, rest bar and retaining bar, and

Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective, exploded view of the panel and the attaching means.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, the backing panel, designated generally by the numeral 1, is rectangular and adapted to be attached to the handle bar 3 of a pushcart, not shown, in upright rearwardly inclined position by attaching means comprising a pair of resilient bars 5 riveted at upper ends thereof, as at 7, to the back and lower portion of said panel 1 parallel with and adjacent side edges of said panel and terminating below the lower or bottom 9 of the panel in arcuate upwardly opening hooks 11 straddling the handle bar 3 and bolted thereto, as at 13. A rest bar 15 with enlarged upstanding ends 17 extends along the bottom 9 and front of the panel 1 for supporting the bottom edge 19 of an advertising sheet 21 positioned against the front of the panel 1, and the bottom edge 23 of a relatively narrower check list sheet 25 positioned in front of the advertising sheet said bar serving to align said sheets vertically.

was

Patentef Dec. 16"

A retaining bar 27 extends along and in front of the rest bar 15 and forms therewith a retaining pocket 29 for the bottom edges 19, 23.

Preferably the bottom edge 19 of the advertising sheet 21 is reduced to fit in said pocket 29.

The bars 15, 27 are secured together at the ends thereof and to the panel 1 by rivets, as at 31, or any other suitable means.

The envelope 33 is formed of any suitable transparent material, such as plastic, and sleeved downwardly over the panel 1 and over the advertising sheet 21 so that said sheet 21 is held flat against said panel and data on the advertising sheet is visible through the envelope. The lower front edge 35 of the envelope 33 is reduced to fit in the pocket 29 for a purpose presently seen.

Snap fastener devices 37, 39 are provided on the back of the panel 1 and on the back of the envelope 33 for pressing together and secure the envelope 33 to said panel 1.

A leaf spring 43 in the vertical center and on the front of the panel 1 is riveted at its upper end as at 45, to said panel and depends into the pocket 29 behind the front of the envelope 33 and clamps the lower edges 35, 19, 23 of the envelope 33, advertising sheet 21 and check list sheet 25 together and against the retaining bar 27 to hold front of the envelope 33 and sections together in flattened condition. A direction spot legend 41 in the front of the envelope 33 indicates where the shopper may direct pressure against the leaf spring 43 to free the lower edges of the envelope 33 and advertising and check list sheets 25, 21 from clamping engagement with the retaining bar 27.

The panel 1 and bars 15, formed of fiberboard, plastic, light strong metal.

The advertising sheet 21 may be of a poster type usually furnished by a store with listed commodities and other data thereon and the check list sheet 25 is prepared with listed data, as at 44 thereon by the shopper for checking against the advertising sheet 21 by folding the check list sheet 25 forwardly to expose data on the advertising sheet 21 or for checking of items on the check list sheet 25 against data on the advertising sheet 21 at the left side of the advertising sheet 21 and check list sheet 25, such data not being shown since the same forms per se, no part of my invention.

However, the check list sheet 25 and the advertising sheet 21 may be unrelated, as regards data thereon, and the holder used for such an unrelated advertising sheet to display the same in a prominent place where it will be readily seen by a shopper. The check list sheet is primarily a reminder sheet to insure against forgetfulness. By placing the check list sheet 25 in the holder misplacement thereof while shopping is avoided and both hands of the shopper are free while shopping. As will be seen the holder provides a prominent place for complete display of an advertising sheet if no check sheet is used and for partial display of an advertising sheet of a check list sheet is used in this holder.

As will be clear, the holder described in the foregoing may be reversed on the handle bar 3, if desired, for reading of the sheets from the front of the cart, and the resilient bars 5 provide for tilting the panel 1 and the sheets 21, 25 and in the desired angle suitable for reading.

Preferably directional insignia is provided, as at 47, on the re aining bar 27 to indicate to a shopper where the check list sheet 25 is to be placed.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention 27 may be inexpensively or hard rubber, or any to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

A holder for an advertising sheet and a shoppers list sheet and attachment to a shoppers pushcart comprising a rectangular backing panel for said sheets and having a lower end, means on said end of the panel forming a front pocket on the panel extending along said end for receiving lower edges of an advertising sheet imposed against the front of the panel and of a shoppers list sheet positioned in front of the advertising sheet, a transexerted thereagainst to release the lower edges of said parent envelope sleeved over said panel and advertising sheet to hold the latter flat against the panel and having a lower edge disposed in said pocket and a leaf spring on the front of the panel behind the advertisingsheet coacting with the pocket to clamp the lower edge of said envelope and the lower edges of said sheets together, said spring being flexible rearwardly by finger pressure sheets and envelope for removal of the sheets and envelope, and a spot indicator on the front of the envelope and in front of the spring for indicating where such finger pressure should be exerted.
