GEORGE B. PHARO, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-SECURERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,922, dated November 12, 1872. A
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. PHARO, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an inside view of a door having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in expansible fastening resting on the floor of a room and against the door thereof, and adapted to firmly hold or fasten the latter and prevent it from being opened on the outside.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a door, 13 the frame thereof, and O the floor of the room, all of which may be of ordinary form and construction. On the inside of the door, near the lower end thereof, I secure a socket, D, which consists of a plate having on its outer face a cavity, a, and on the floor near the door, in line with the socket D, is secured a similar socket, E. F represents the fastener. It consists of two parts, G H, each of suitable form, with pointed ends b. These two parts are fitted and connected together by a screwjoint consisting of a screw, 0, attached to one part, and a screw-socket, d, in the other part, whereby the two parts may be made to recede from or approach each other. For convenience of operation the parts may be formed with handles or projections c to admit firm hold of the thumbs and fingers.
The fastener is of such size that when the two parts are close\to each other it may be introduced into the sockets D E, in which p0- August, 1872.
sition, resting diagonally, the device'is ready for operation.
By holding one part of the fastener and properly rotating the other part, the fastener is expanded, thus firmly bearing against the door and floor and preventing opening of the former from the outside, except by breakage of the hinges or wood-work, or sawing or cutting of the door. In the latter case, unless the opening made is large enough to permit both hands, one foot and one hand, or full access to the two parts, the fastening cannot be unscrewed or contracted, as turning one part will rotate the whole fastener, the pointed ends b acting as an axis and permitting free rotation of the fastener.
The ends of the fastener rest in the deepest part of the sockets D E, whereby the device cannot be forced vertically or laterally from its position, or be displaced except by breakage. I
Should the sockets D E be dispensed with,
the ends I) of the fastening will pierce the wood-work and in other respects operate similarl y to that heretofore stated.
To properly release the fastener, hold one part and rotate the other so as to cause the fastener to contract, whereby the length of the fastener is smaller than the space between the points at which it enters the sockets, so that the fastener is easily removed, and the door may be opened as usually.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'isr The part H, provided with a screw, a, bandles e e, and pointed end I), in combination with the socketed part G d, provided with handles cc and pointed end b, and sockets D E, as and for the purpose set forth.
The above signed by me this 23d day of Witnesses: GEORGE B. PHARO.
JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, JACOB E. SoHrEnr.
