UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLIN M. MERRIAM AND JOSEPH B.. MERRIAM, OF WEST MERIDEN,
' CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING KNOBS TO SPINDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,285, dated July 29, 1873; application filed April 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANKLIN M. MER- RIAM and JOSEPH B. MERRIAM, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Knobs, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a detail sectional view, illustrating our invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same taken through the line iv 00, Fig. 1. 4
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention has for its object to improve the construction of door-knobs, so that they may be more readily adjusted to the door, may be more securely held, and may be less liable to become loose. The invention consists in constructing the rose and combining it with the spindle, neck, socket-nut, sleeve, and washer, as hereinafter described.
A represents the spindle, which is made square, and has one, two, or more transverse notches or grooves, a, formed upon the side of one end to receive the screw that fastens the neck B of the knob C to said spindle. D is a cap or thilnble having a square hole formed in its base, and the body of which is made of such a size as to fit upon the inner end of the neck B, and thus prevent the possibility of the screw working out. Upon the outer end of the square spindle A is cut a screw-thread to receive the nut E, the outer middle part of which is recessed to adapt it to serve as a cap or socket to receive the neck B of the other knob C. The neck B of the knob C is secured to the spindle A by a screw which passes in through a hole in the side of the socket-nut E, so as to lock the said nut as well as to secure the knob B'C. F is a sleeve slipped upon the socket-nut E to keep the screw from working out. G is the rose, the cavity of which is so formed as to receive within it the socket-nut E and sleeve F. The outer end of the rose G projects inward so as to cover the ends of the said nut E and sleeve F, and fit upon the neck B of the knob (J. The inner side of the plate of the rose G is recessed to fit upon a washer, H, interposed between the' said rose and the side of the door to prevent the door from being chafed by the said rose.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The rose G, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, in combination with the spindle A, neck B, socket-nut E, sleeve F, and washer H, as set forth.
