Description

,will readily slide over the thread and grooves FRANK RALLIER, OF JOHN STOWN PENNSYLVANIA.
. IMPROVEMENT IN Nur-Locks.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.' 179,994, dated July 18, 1876; application tiled June 12, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BRALLIER, ot' Johnstown, in the county ot' Cambria and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut Looks, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a partly vertical central section, and partly per` spective.
This invention relates to a device t'or securing a locking-nut in its position on thcthreaded end of a bolt, so that it cannot be rattled or shaken out; and it consists more particularlyin providing the nut with a key embedded in it, having an inclined face and operated by a spring to engage in vertical grooves or recesses in the bolt-shaft, so that while the key as the 'nut is being turned down. 'an opposite motion will be prevented by the inner end of the key taking into the grooves,` all as will now be more in detail set out and explained.
In the drawings, A denotes the nut, having in a suitable socket, a, the key A', adapted to be automaticallyv operated by spring a. The vertical inner face of the key is inclined from left to right, and thus adapted to seat itself snug in thc angular vertical grooves b b (one'or more) in the outside of the shaft ot the bolt B, when, in the movements of the nut on the bolt, the two' come into conjunction. Vhen thc nut is being turned down on the bolt the spring behind the key allowsthe key to move back sufficiently 'to give a clear inner diameter to the nut, and allow the key to slide easily upon the upper surface of the screw thread on the bolt; there is, consequently, no difficulty in turning the nut down. The opposite motion is securely prevented by the engagement of said key in one of the vert-ical grooves; but if for any cause it shall be desired to turn the nut in the opposite direction, it can be done by pulling the key back by means of pin a", which projects through a suitable orice in the side ot' the nut. This pin or handle also serves to guide and steady the key in its movements, and also in good measure to hold it and its spring in the nut when the nut is taken oii' the bolt. This nut cannot be shaken orjolted out ot' its place, because no motion of it will serve to throw the key outof its engagement withy the groove, nor Will any such motion of the bolt conduce to this end. The key and spring, being embedded in the nut, are held in a strong and safe seat, 'free from all harm or accident. The pin may be constructed as now shown, or he shortened or otherwise conveniently made and adapted so as not to be inconvenient for use or unsightly to look at.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ot a nut, having an apertured recess, a reciprocating key resting in the recess with a guide and handle projecting through the aperture ot the recess, a spring acting against the key and the opposing side ot' the recess, and a verticaliy-grooved bolt, as and for the purposes specified. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing' as my own I afx my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
FRANK BRALLIER.
