COMBINED PENDULOUS TABLE AND Clllr'lIlRS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Application filed July 1, 1919. Serial No. 307,951.
To all whom it may concern,
Be it known that I, V'Asim N. DMITRIEFF, a citizen oi Russia, residing at 229 East th street, New 'Yorlg county of New York and State ot New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined leudulous Table and Chairs, of which the followingis a. specification.
This invention has as its object the pro vision oi a table supported at a central point thereabove, upon a universal joint, permitting the table to remain substantially horlzontal at all times irrespective of the inclination of surrounding surfaces.
A further object is to provide a plurality of chairs supported below the table, so that the same may be used for any desired purposes, as dining.
A still further object is to provide means whereby the chairs are indepen ently adjustable to and from the edge of the table.
These and Other like objects, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described andshown in the accompanying drawings, forming amaterial part of this disclosure and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view showlng a table made in accordance with the invention and the chairs combined therewith.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the same.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view thereof, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view showing the chair supporting means.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 indicates the ceiling or lower surfaceof a support, as for instance, that of a ship, to which is secured by bolts 11, a cleat 12 having downwardly extending lugs 13, through which pass the pin 14, connecting the upper member 15 of a universal joint, the lower element 16 being secured by the pin 17 in apair of lugs 18, extending up from a bar 19.
Formed with each end of the bar 19, are diverging, downwardly extending arms 20, in which are engaged rods 21, having heads 22, supported upon the upper surface of the arms 20, the lower ends of the rods being inturned, and provided with heads 23, after passing through suitable openings formed at the ends of the vertical elements of a pair of rolled angle irons 94, which constitute the side rails of a table top 25, engaged thereover, the construction being such that the table top acts in the manner of a pendulum, maintaining itself substantially level, due to the freedom of the connecting joint between the bar 19, and supporting cleat 12'.
Extending between the angle irons 24 are other angle irons, their horizontal elements 26 being below the table top or platform 25, while ixed between their vertical elements is a channel iron 23, containing between its downwardly disposed side elements a bar 29.
Engaged with the channel iron 28 and bar 29 so as to slide therealong, are a plurality of forks 30, formed with arms 31, adapted to be clamped, when in an adjusted position, by bolts 32 provided with wing nuts 33, so that the arms, which are arranged in pairs, may be adjusted along the rail.
The diagonally disposed arms 31 are formed into branches 34, extending horizontally outward at 35, and then upward into elements 36, connected by plate heads 37, and mounted upon their inner adjacent sides, on pins 38, are rollers 39, arranged in pairs at the ends 01 the arms and extending into longitudinal recesses 40, formed in op posits sides of the chair seats 41, the periphery of the rollers being engaged in arcuate depressions 42 in the upper wall of the recess 40, so that by raising the chair seats 41 they may be moved longitudinally of the engaging arms and adjusted thereby to or from the table in an obvious manner.
Extending up from the seats 41 are backs 43, which may be connected by arms 44, to posts 45 extending between the outer ends of the arms 44 and the seat 41 in the usual manner.
Extending between the outer arm element 34 are slats 46 adapted to act as foot rests so as to form a comfortable and convenient seat for parties using the table.
It is to 'be noted that the device may be used for other purposes besides that on shipboard, and it will be clearly apparent that chairs may be placed at the ends of the table 25 if desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a rectangular table top, means for supporting said table top from a point thei-eabove, so that said table top is free to swing in any direction, a central beam carried below said table top, a plurality of forks engageable with said beam, means for clamping said forks in adjustment, arms formed with said forks, chairs adjustably engaged at the extreme ends of said arms, said arms constituting means foi adjusting said chairs to or from said table top.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a rectangular rigid table top and means of supporting said table top from a point thereabove so that said table top is free to swing in any direction, of a plurality of chairs engaged With said table top, means for adjusting said chairs to 01' from the edges of said table top means for clamping said chairs in their ad usted positions in front of said table top, and a foot iest combined with the supports for said chairs- In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
