Application September is, 1943, Serial No. 503,007 roia ms; (or. 155-124) v This invention relates to improvements in combined tables and benches or the like and the primary object of the invention is to provide a sturdy combination of this typejin which the space beneath the table will not be obstructed, that is, will allow ample leg room.

Another objectis to supply combination furniture of this character which may be shipped in knock-down condition'and set up by unskilled one which will be'exceedingly useful forthe purposes for which it is designed. i

With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in de-- tail, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. 1

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, 8 designates end legs.

of benches l of arc shape. Four of these benches are arranged as shown in Fig. l to form substantially a circle with the ends of the benches spaced apart as indicated at 8 to allow for entrance and departure. To facilitate assembling or dismantling, the top of each bench is'connected to its legs by any suitable means such as screws 9.

A vertically disposed beam l0 extends diametrically across the circle formed by the benches and is supported at the medial portions of a pair of oppositely disposed benches and has its end portions secured to the seat portions thereof by bolts H or the like. Another beam l2 formed by two girders i3 is arranged at right angles to the beam l0 and is firmly secured to the latter and to the medial portion of the seats of the otherpair of benches by any suitable means, indicated at I4. The lower edge of each beam rises from its end portions towards its medial portion for legroom purposes.

A preferably circular table top I5 is mounted horizontally on the beams and each of the latter extends diametrically across the bottom surface or the topso-that persons occupying the benches may readily use the table top. The top may be secured to the beam by any suitable means. For example, the top may be provided on its under side with a spaced cleats I50, secured thereto by screws i 5b or the like and they may straddle the beam and be connected to the latter by bolts I5c.- The cleats may be reenforced by triangular pieces l5d secured in place by any preferred means.

It will be understood from the foregoing that one part from another so that the structure may be shipped in' knock-down condition and then set up by unskilled labor.

Instead of adopting the circular scheme indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, I may follow the square form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. In this embodiment, each bench l1 instead of being of arc shape will be' straight and the benches at opposite sides of the table will be arranged parallel to one another to accord with the parallel side edges of the rectangular table top I8. Of course, the beams in this form may be the same as those in Figs. 1 and 2.

In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 5 only a single pair of benches I9 are employed in connection with a rectangular table top 20.

, They are arranged at opposite sides of such table and support a single beam 2| which has its ends resting on and secured to the benches. The beam supports the table top and the'latter has portions arranged symmetrically at opposite sides of the beam. In this form of the invention, as well as in the other forms, if desired, a single table leg 22 may be arranged directly beneath the central portion of the table top and terminates at the same level as the lower ends of the bench legs 23. The table leg is preferably bifurcated at its upper portion so as to receive the beam, and braces 24 are arranged at right angles to the beam and each has its ends connected respectively, by any suitable means, to the table leg and to the table top, so that they, in effect, form a second beam.

In any form of the invention, the benches may be P dGd with backs as indicated at 25 and it will be manifest that the benches, beams, legs and table tops may be made of various shapes.

From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and advantages of my combined furniture may be readily understood and it will be apparent that changes may be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. Combination furniture comprising a table top having spaced parallel cleats rigidly secured to the bottom thereof and arranged at opposite sides of the middle of the top, a beam structure supporting the top and consistingof a pair of beams arranged at right angles to one another, each beam extending across the top from one side thereof to an oppositeside thereof and having end portions projecting in opposite directions from the top, the table top and cleats forming a saddle straddling one of said beams, means rigidly and detachably securing said cleats to the last-mentioned beam, and pairsof confronting benches having seat portions positioned at a lower elevation than said topand .posite directionsfrom the top, the table top and cleats forming a saddle straddling one'of said beams, means rigidly and detachably securing said cleats to the last-mentioned beam, and pairs of confronting benches having seat portions positioned at alower elevation than said top and rig dly supporting saidbeams, the lower edge of each beam havingan arc-shaped portion between the benches which support the beam to provide leg room beneath the table top.

3. Combination furniture comprising a table top having spaced parallel cleats rigidly secured to the bottom thereof and arranged at opposite sides of the middle of the top, a beam structure supporting the top and consisting of a .pair of beams arranged at right angles to one another, each beam extending across the top from one side thereof to an opposite side thereof and having end portions projecting in opposite directions from the top, the table top and cleats forming a saddle straddling one of said beams, means rigidly and detachably securing said cleats to the .last-mentioned' beam, pairs of confronting benches having-seat portions positioned at a lower elevation than said top and rigidly supporting said beams, the lower'edge of each beam I rising fromits end portions towards. its medial portion to provide leg room beneath the table top, and means, detachably securing theends of the beams to the benches.

, 4. Combination furniture comprising a substantiallyv circular table top having spaced parallel cleats rigidly secured to the bottom thereof and arranged. at opposite sides of the middle of the top, a beam structure supporting said top and co'nsistingof a pair'of beams arranged at right angles to one another, each beam extending diametrically across the top from one side thereof to anoppositeside thereof and having, end portions projecting in opposite directions from the top, the table top and cleats forming a saddle straddling one of said beams, means rigidly and detachably securing said cleats to the last-mentioned beam, and pairs of confronting arc-shaped benches having seat portions positioned at a lower elevation than said top and rigidly supporting said beams,- the ends of the benches being spaced from one another to facilitate occupation of the benches, the lower edge of each beam rising from its end portions towards its medial portion to provide leg room beneath the table top.
