To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY BITTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Chair- Beds, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to a convertible chair bed, wherein the back portion thereof is adapted for angular adjustment to permit the occupant to recline at different angles and also capable of adjustment to a. horizontal position, whereby a full length bed is provided, if desired.

The principal objects of this invention are to provide a novel structure for retaining the back in its adjusted position when used as a chair, and also for affording supporting legs when the structure is used as a bed; to provide a novel form of hinge structure which permits of the back to be pivotally connected to one edge of the seat and to swing over the same and at all times capable of contacting with the cooperating edge of the seat portion.

With the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention in use as a chair.

The frames are upholstered in any suitable manner, as at 8, orare provided with suitable cushions, if desired, and the seat forming frame carries supporting legs a, preferablv one disposed at each corner thereof. The back and seat forming members are disposed in parallel relation and are connected at opposite ends by the hinges 5, each consisting of two members, one comprising a plate 6 secured preferably to the opposite upper rear corners of the end wall of theframe 1, and each provided with an outwardly projecting headed fulcrum pin 7.

Cooperating with each plate 6 is a plate 8 secured to the lower upper corner of the frame 2, and said plates are each provided with an elongated slot 9 disposed substantially parallel with the upper surfaceof the frame 2, and each adapted for receiving one of said fulcrum pins 7. The elongated slot of the respective plates 8 permits of a swinging movement of the'back relatively to the seat portion and insures a close contact between adjacent surfaces throughout the. entire length of the cooperating edges of the back and seat portion both when the back portion is upwardly inclined or is disposed in a horizontal plane.

The back is retained in its adjusted position relatively to the seat by the arms 10, one positioned at each'end of the frames 1 and 2, as in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and said arms are connected by a tie rod 11 extending through the frame 2 and disposed preferably parallel with the lower edge thereof. The rod 11 is fulcrumed in bearing sleeves 12 extending through openings in the walls of the frame 2, enabling the operator in grasping one arm to pivotally move the other arm with the one grasped. The arms 10 each consist of a pair of links 13 and 14 pivotally connected together at 15 and each link 14 is formed on one surface with a plurality of teeth 16 adapted to engage a retaining stud 17 extendmg upwardly from a plate 18 secured to'the ends of the frame 1 adjacent its upper edge, as in the drawing. A suitable finger piece 19 is provided at the lower end of each link 14 to enable the operator to readily grasp the link when varying the adjustment of angle of the back forming poruntil the same assume a position substantially parallel with the top or bottom surface of the frame 2, and then bends or pivots the respective links 14 on their fulcrum 15 until the same assume a substantially right angular position downwardly from their cooperating links 13, as in Fig. 6.

To provide a support for the point of pivotal connection between links 13 and 14 of the respective arms when the links are moved to provide a supporting leg for the back, I employ a suitable part 20, comprising a main plate 21 and an auxiliary or face plate 22 spaced therefrom and connected therewith by a uniting portion 23, provid ing between said plates 21 and 22 a link re ceiving' pocket 24 opening toward the fulcrum point of the arms and also toward the rear or under edge of the frame 2, the wall 23 closingthe two other edges of the pocket and providing supporting surfaces disposed at right angles to each other, and

with each contact the outer ends of the links 13 and the inner ends ofthe links 14 when said links are disposed to provide supporting legs for the back. V V 7 If it is desired, the links 13'and' 14 form ing the respective arms may be provided, adjacent their pivotal connection 15, with interlocking punch portions 25 adapted for engagement when the respective links are pivoted to provide supporting legs for the frame 2.

It will be observed that a chair of the commonly known Morris type, wherein the back is adapted for adjustment to various angles, is by my present invention capable of beingconverted into a bed by the mere adjustment of changing the position of the members utilized for retaining the chair back in its adjusted position when the struc- V ture is employed as a chair.

I claim:

1. A convertible chair bed, comprising seat and back portions hinged together to permit the upward swinging of said back portion from a horizontal position, means consisting of a plurality of connected arms arranged in pairs at opposite ends of the back and pivotally connected therewith for coopzontal position, and a part at each end of the back for cooperating with theai-ms at their pointof interconnection to hold the same relatively to the back. 7

2. In combination with a pivoted chair back hinged at one edge for swinging movement upwardly from a horizontal position,

a pair of supporting arms one pivotally con nected to each end of said back and'each consisting of a pair of pivotally connected links, the terminal link of each pair provided with a plurality of engaging teeth, a pair of stops with which said teeth are adapted to engage for retaining the back in its adjusted position when the same is swung upwardly from a horizontal position, and a pair of pocketed members carried by .the back and each adapted for receiving the cooperating pivoted link ends of each pair of arms on the terminal link of each armbeing swung to approximately 45 anglerelatively to its associated link, whereby the arms are detachably held to the backat a-point re moved from their point of connection therewith and with the terminal links providing a pair of downwardly extended supporting legs for said back when the same is in a substantially horizontal position.
