The object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture which can be readily converted to a regular chair or to a rocking chair.

Another object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture which can be arranged as a rocking chair or which can be turned upside down to provide a regular chair, the chair adapted to be used in a home or other locality.

A further object of the invention is to provide a chair which is extremely simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral it) designates a horizontally disposed seat portion which may be fabricated of any suitable material such as wood, and connected to the front end of the seat portion it) is a pair of posts or uprights iii, the posts 11 being secured to the seat portion lit in any suitable manner, as for example by means of screws 12, Figure l.

Secured to the rear of the seat portion it! is a pair of uprights or bars 14, and extending between the bars 14 and posts 11 are braces 15, the bars including upper and lower portions which are arranged angularly with respe t to each other.

An arm 13 is hingedly or pivotally connected to each of the bars 14 by means of a pin 16 which extends through the arm 13 and through an opening 17 in the bar 14, the pin 16 being arranged in threaded engagement with the seat portion it), Figure 2. A back rest 18 extends between the pair of arms 13 and is secured thereto in any suitable manner as for example by means of screws 9.

Extending between the bars 14 and posts ll is a pair of curved rocker members 19 which are adapted to en gage the floor as shown in Figure 4 when the chair is to be used as a rocking chair. When the chair is to be used as a regular chair the chair is turned over 180 degrees from the position shown in Figure 4 to the position shown in Figure 1 so that the arcuate members 19 provide arm supports or arm rests. When the chair is being used as a rocking chair, the braces provide the arm rests, Figure 4. The back rest 13 and arms 13 can be swung to the position shown in Figure 1 or the position shown in Figure 4 about an axis extending through the pins 16. A means is provided for maintaining the back rest in either of its two positions, and this means comprises a first pair of aligned stop members 2% which are pivotally connected to the rear surface of the bars 1 by pins 21, Figure 3. When the stop members 20 are pi oted to the position shown in Figure 3, these members 77 atet will limit rearward swinging movement of the arms 13. The stop members 29 can of course be swung to a position so that they are in alignment with the bars lid so that the back rest 18 can be swung to the position shown in Figure 4 and for maintaining the back rest iii immobile in the position shown in Figure 4, a second pair of .;top members 22 may be pivotally connected to the bars in use the article of furniture of the present invention may be used as a regular chair with the parts arranged as shown in Figure 1. Thus, when the chair is being used in a normal manner as a regular chair the members 19 provide arm rests and the back rest 3.3 is held against swinging movement by the pivoted stop members 29. When the chair is to be used as a rocking chair, it is only necessary to turn the chair upside down or degrees so that the arcuate members it provide a bottom support for the rocking chair, and the braces 25 now become the arm rests. Further, the back rest 13 and arms 13 are pivoted about the pins 1 5 and the stop members 22 are moved so that they hold the baclr rest in the position shown in Figure 4.

The chair may be made of any suitable material. and the chair can be made in any desired size. The latches 2b and 22 maintain the back rest in its proper or adjusted position. The article of furniture of the present invention is especially suitable as a household article.

I claim:

1. A convertible chair comprising a horizontally disposed seat portion, a pair of spaced parallel posts secured to the front of said seat portion, a pair of spaced parallel vertical bars secured to the rear of said seat portion, braces extending between said posts and bars adjacent one end, curved rocker members extending between and at the end of said bars and posts, an arm pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of each of said bars, and a back rest extending between said pair of arms and secured thereto, and pivotally mounted stops connected to the rear surface of said bars.

2. A convertible chair comprising a horizontally disposed seat portion, a pair of spaced parallel posts secured to the front of said seat portion and arranged at the sides of said seat portion, a pair of spaced parallel bars secured to the rear of said seat portion, said bars being arranged at the sides of said seat portion and in: uding an upper and lower portion, said upper and lower portions being arranged angularly with respect to each other, braces ex tending between said posts and bars adjacent one end, curved rocker members extending between and at the end of said bars and posts, each of said posts and bars having one end fiat for engagement with a floor, the other end of each of said posts and bars being shaped arcuately and engaging said curved rocker members, an arm pivotally connected to an intermediate portion of each of said bars, and a bacl-t rest extending between said pair of arms and secured thereto, and pivotally mounted stops connected to the rear surface of said bars, said braces being arranged in spaced parallel relation with respect to each other and with respect to said seat portion, one of said stops being connected to the upper portion of said bars and the other stop being connected to the lower portion of said bars, said stops being mounted for movement into and out a position at right angles with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bars.
