The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination furniture and more particularly to a combined table and chair for use by infants and small children.

An important object of the invention is to provide a combined table and chair of this character for use by children when eating and including a novel table top construction having a folding seat recessed therein for seating the child at the table and wherein the table top may be used for other purposes, such as holding toys or the like when the chair is folded under the top.

A further object of the invention is to provide a foldable chair supported in an opening in the table top and including a folding back, seat and foot rest foldable under the table top and wherein the back forms a closure for the opening in the table top.

A still further object is to providefoldable legs for the combined table and chair to'facilitate handling and storing thereof in a compact form, when not in use.

A still further object is to provide an article of furniture of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which thesame is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates the table generally which includes the top 6 recessed below the upper edges of the side rails T.

6 Claims. (Cl. 155-123) Folding legs a are pivoted to the inner corners of the side rails 'l to brackets 9 for folding under the top 6 and are held in an open position by folding braces II] also pivoted at one end to the bracket 9, the braces being constructed of resilient material and formed with a catch II at their free ends engaging a keeper I2 secured to an adjacentside of the leg.

An opening I3 is formed in the table top 6 adjacent one edge thereof and a pair of rails H! are suitably secured to the underside of the table top adjacent opposite sides of the opening. A rod I5 issupported at its-ends in the rails- It and on which the lower edge of a chair back I 6 is pivotally supported for vertical swinging'move- -ment into and out of position in the opening [3.

The back I6 is positioned on the rod I5 so that when-the back is swung downwardly the same will be flush with the upper surface of the table top 6 and when the back is'swung upwardly it will project upwardly abovethe table top in a rearwardly inclined position.

' A chair frame designated generally at I! in,- cludes front and rear pairs of hanger arms I8 and is, the front hanger arms 18 being pivotally supported on the rails I4 adjacent the front edge of opening I3 and the rear hanger arms I!) being pivoted on the rod I5 outwardly of the side edges of the back I6. The lower ends of arms I8 and I9 are connected by rails 29 which project forwardly of the front arms I8 and on which is suitably secured a foot rest 2|. Seat rails 22 are also pivotally connected to the intermediate portion of arms I8 and I9 and on which a seat 23 is suitably secured.

The back It is held in its raised position. by means of a spring projected locking pin 2d recessed in one side edge of the back, and with the outer end of the pin rounded for seating in a recess 25 in the adjacent rear hanger arm I9. The back I6 is also looked in its raised position by means of a catch 26 pivoted at one end to a plate 21 secured to the rear edge of one of the rear hanger arms I9, at a point below the rod I5, the catch 26 being swingable upwardly behind the lower portion of the back It and provided with a knob 28 pressed from its inner surface for recessing in the back to hold the catch in its locking position.

The chair frame I! swings into its lower open position by gravitation and is foldable upwardly under the top 6 as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings by first releasing

24 and 26 whereupon the back I6 may swing downwardly to close opening I3 and the chair frame I! is then swun 3 upwardly against the top 6 and is secured in its raised or folded position b a pivoted hook 29 secured to one of the rail 14 and engaging an eye 30 at the front end of one of the lower rails 20.

When the chair back I6 is raised into its open position in opening 13, the chair and table may be used for feeding a child with the table top 6 serving as a tray, and when the chair back I6 is folded downwardly and the chair frame I! folded upwardly under the table top the table may be used for holding toys or for other purposes. When used in this manner, a removable table top 3| is placed on the permanent top 6 to cover the folded chair back 16,. the removable top 3| being fitted within the upper edges of the rails I of the table top.

When not in use the table may be folded by releasing the braces I and swinging the legs 8 upwardly against the underside of the table top 6 and a carrying handle 32 is suitably secured to one side of the table for conveniently carrying the same.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A combined table and chair comprising a table top having an opening, a rod supported under the opening, a foldable chair frame pivoted at its rear end to said rod for folding upwardly against the underside of the top, and a chair back also pivoted on said rod for swinging downwardly into a folded position in said opening flush with the table top.

2. A combined table and chair comprising a table top having an opening, a rod supported under the opening, a foldable chair frame pivoted at its rear end to said rod for folding upwardly against the underside of the top, a chair back also pivoted on said rod for swinging downwardly into a folded position in said opening flush with the table top, and a catch holding the back to the chair frame in a raised position.

3. A combined table and chair comprising a table top having an opening, a rod supported under the opening, a foldable chair frame pivoted at its rear end to said rod for folding upwardly against the underside of the top, a chair back also pivoted on said rod for swinging downwardly into a folded position in said opening flush with the table top, and a catch carried by the chair frame holding the back in a raised position.

4. A combined table and chair comprising a table top having an opening, a rod supported under the opening, a foldable chair frame pivoted at its rear end to said rod for folding upwardly against the underside of the top, a chair back also pivoted on said rod for swinging downwardly into a folded position in said opening flush with the table top, and a swinging catch pivoted to the chair frame for movement into a position behind the back for holding the back in a raised position.

5. A combined table and chair comprising a table top having an opening, a rod supported under the opening, a foldable chair frame pivoted at its rear end to said rod for folding upwardly against the underside of the top, a chair back also pivoted on said rod for swinging downwardly into a folded'position in said opening flush with the table top, and a spring projected catch means in said chair back for engaging said frame with a snap action to hold the chair back against downward swinging into forward position.

6. A combined table and chair comprising a table top having an opening, a pair of rails secured at the underside of the top at opposite sides of the opening, a foldable chair frame including front and rear pairs of hanger arms, means pivotally supporting the upper ends of the front hanger arms to said rails, the rear hanger arms being pivoted to said rod, a chair back pivoted to said rod for swinging downwardl into a folded position in said opening flush with the surface of the table top, and catch means holding the back in a raised position to at least one of said rear hanger arms.
