Description
McCARTHY. ARMCHAIR.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 5, 1921.
1,389,254. Patented Aug- 30, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL MCCARTHY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM MORIARTY, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ARMCHAIR.
Application filed January 6, 1921.
To all to 710m it may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL MGCARTHY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 30 Betterton street, Drury Lane, London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Armchairs of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n arm chairs of the type in which the inclination of the back can be altered by sliding a frame whose two side members rest on the arms proper of the chair and whose rear member supports the hinged back of the chair.
According to this invention the arms proper of the chair are slotted and are provided at intervals with pins or the like, while the side members of the frame are each provided with a depending stop or hook adapted to pass through one slot and engage one or other of the pins.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair constructed according to this invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the chair, Fig. 8 is a section on the lines 3 3, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4C is a plan of a port-ion of the chair, a portion of the frame being removed to show the slot.
Referring to the drawings, a are the arms proper of the chair, Z) are slots formed therein, 0 are plates screwed to the arms in such a manner as to leave a space between them, (Z are a series of pins which traverse Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 30, 1921. Serial No. 435,366.
the slots, 6 is the frame whose rear member serves to support the back of the chair and whose side members are each provided with a depending hook 7 which passes through the slot Z) and engages one of the pins (Z. 9 are screws depending from the side members of the frame 6 which also pass through the slots Z) and which are of sufiicient length to allow the hooks f to move over the pins d but which are provided with heads sufli ciently lar e to prevent the frame 0 being removed.
It will be seen that the frame 6 can be moved to adjust its position by a person sitting in the chair.
What I claim is The combination of an arm-chair having slots extending through the arms and running longitudinally thereof, a series of pins spaced apart and crossing the slots, plates secured to the tops of the arms and having an elongated space between their inner edges, a back hinged to the chair body and a frame for holding the back in adjusted positions comprising horizontal side members resting on the arms but movable verti cally to a limited extent and a rear member supporting the chair back, hooks on the side members extending through the slots and between the pins and adapted to engage the pins and headed bolts extending through the spaces between the plates and into the slots which limit the vertical movement of the side members.
MICHAEL MCCARTHY.
