UNITED, s'r'rss THEODORE R. TBEIBER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H.
' MCWHORTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IBOWLING- ALLEY.
Application file'd April 30, 1927. Serial No. 187,744.
My invention has for its main objects the provision of a bowling alley which is variably adjustable for leveling the bed of the alley, and which is constructed largelyof metal, all with a view toward providing an alley of good playing qualities, economy in manufacture, ease of erection, solidity, comparatively great amount of salvage for reerection after taking it down, and leveling without extensive planing, of the upper or playing surface of the bed.
l/Vith these objects in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts by which said objects and certain other objects hereinafter appearing, are effected, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the said drawings Figure 1 is a condensed cross section of a bowllng alley embodying my invention, certain detail parts being omitted therefrom.
Figure 2 is an enlarged partial and condensed cross section of the same showing the parts in detail.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Figure 4 is a partial view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 and with the bed re-' moved. I
Figure 5 is a condensed partial side elevation of the same.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates a bowling alley bed and which is constructed of suitable material such as wood, whiehas shown and as usual consists of sleepers disposed in'verticalplanes and tongued and grooved and nailed together. See Figures 1 and 2. v
The bed is carried on a carriage, preferably metal, which is constructed as follows. A pair of parallel metal right angle members 2 extend longitudinally of the bed and carriage and have legsthereof disposed inwardly and projecting downwardly while an the other legs thereof consequently are disposed horizontally and project outwardly from the first mentioned legs. These angle members form the side portions of the carriage and metal angle members 3, forming cross ties, extend between the angle members 2 at intervals therealong and are secured to the angle members 2 by means of suitable metal brackets 4, the angle members 3 being disposed with the legs thereof respectively horizontal and vertical and having the upper surfaces of the horizontal legs thereof.
disposed in the same plane as the upper sur- L face of the horizontal legs of the angle members 2 to form a suitable support surface for the bed 1. See Figures 1, 2, and 4. Metal right angle members 5 extend longitudinally of the carriage and have legs thereof secured downwerdly on respective of the horizontal legs of the angle members 2 adjacent the outer edges thereof and have legs thereof disposed inwardly and projecting upwardly for transversely retaining the bed 1 on the carriage.
The carriage is supported on a base which i is constructed as follows. A pair of parallel metal right angle members 6 extend longi' tudinally' of the bed and carriage and have legs thereof disposed inwardly and projecting upwardly in overlapping relation with the downwardly projecting legs of the angle members 2. See Figures 1, 2, 3, and
The carriage is supported on the base'for vertical adjustment variable throughout its extent in the following manner. See Fig-.
ures 2 and 5. Disposed at intervals along the angle members 2 and 6 are a plurality'of horizontally disposed headed metal screws 11 which pass through holes in the overlappingvertical legs of the angle members. and 6 and are screwthreaded into metal nuts 12 for clamping the said overlying legs together. One of each pair of holes through which ascrew 11 passes is vertically slotted,
'as designated at 13, whereby the carriage may be adjusted vertically and secured in adjusted position. Vertically vertically disposed metal adjusting screws 14, disposed at intervals along the angle members 6, pass upwardly through suitable meta-l angle brackets 15 secured on the upwardly extending legs of the angle members (3 and are screwthreaded through metal nuts 16 above these brackets and abut the under surfaces of the horizontal legs of the angle members 2 for vertically adjusting the same in aconvenient manner.
Thus itwill be observed that a plurality of Horizontally spaced independently vertically adjustable metal devices arranged in two parallel rows extending longitudinally of the carriage or alley are provided for vertically adjusting the carriage and bed variably throughout their extent, so that the bed may be leveled without planing, whatever planing that is necessary, being to remove only local irregularities on the upper or playing surface of the bed.
Leather or other suitable material is preferably interposed between the bed 1 and the carriage and bet-ween the members forming the carriage and base, as designated at 17, to effect a slight cushion and to reduce the noise resulting from use of the alley. See Figures 2 and 5.
The cross tie members 7 of the base are,
extended laterally for. the support of ball return chutes 18 at the sides of the bed.
It will be observed that the construction is such that the structural metal. parts may be, as shown, made from stock metal angle bars and fabricated sheet steel with obvious advantage, and it will be further observed that in addition to providing a bed support of desirable characteristics the carriage and base may be taken down and re-erected with resulting economy in moving the alley.
While I have described and shown one form of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown, as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my in.- vention, but having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following.
