AUGUST JOHNSON, OF TOIVOLA, MINNESOTA.
GUARD RAIL.
Application filed May 20,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aneusr JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toivola, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guard Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in guard rails and has for its primary object the provision of means for anchoring a guard rail to the main rail of railroad track and also for forming seats for the rails upon the ballast of the track, thereby firmly holding the rails in place.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a guard rail of the above stated character which will be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a guard rail constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view illustrating the same,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the main rail of a railroad track mounted upon the usual ties 2 and which are located within ballast 3. The main rail 1 is secured to the ties with the usual spikes 4. As a safety medium to 1922. Serial No. 562,282.
the main rail 1, a guard rail 6 is provided which extends parallel with the main rail and rests upon the tie and is secured thereto by spikes. The guard rail 6 has its ends curved outwardly from the main rail for the purpose of permitting the flanges upon the car wheels to readily enter the space between the guard and main rails. The guard rail has formed integrally therewith chairs or plates 8 which extend under the main rail and have upstanding flanges 9 to engage the opposite side of the main rail from that side on which the guard rail is located. The chairs or plates are located between the ties and rest upon the ballast so as to form a seat for both rails and also to prevent sepa' ration of the guard rail from the main rail.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A guard rail having a plate formed in tegral therewith and at one side thereof and adapted to extend under the main rail and rest upon the ballast between the ties, said plate having a depression in its upper surface adapted to receive the base of the main rail and space the guard rail from the main rail, and said plate extending longitudinally of the guard rail a distance equal to the distance between a pair of ties and adapted to having its side edges abut the opposed edges of a pair of ties, to-prevent longitudinal movement of the guard rail relative to the main rail.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST JOHNSON.
