CARD AND LABEL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
vApplication led December 20, 191'8'. Serial No. 267,665.
To all whom 'it may concer/n.: i
Be it known that I, JOHN I). KERN', a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Card and Label Holders, of which the following isa speciication.
My present invention pertains to devices for holding cards, labels and the like and detachably fixing the same to the edges of shelves and similar supports; and it con-- sists in the peculiar and advantageous fastening holder hereinafter described and defi-v nitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
device as it appears when positioned on the edge of a shelf and with a price label in the holder.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2--2of 'Fig'. 1. 25
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device as it appears normally or precedent to its ap-` plication to the edge of a shelf or the like.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of t e drawings.
The shelf illustrated is designated 1, and
may be a shelf of any description without mandrel .and tools for shaping .the sheetfof .metalfm the mandrel."
affecting m invention. 2 is a car or price tag, designed to be connected to the edge of the shelf through. the
medium of my novel device, and this card or tag may be of any suitable material.
My novel card and label holder and fas#v tening device is formed of a single pieceof thin sheet metal, and is resilient incharacter. It comprises a body 3, lower and upper flanges 4 and 5, disposed parallel to the body 6, which reach rearwardly from, the said flanges. In forming the flanges 4.- and 5 and the arms 6, the single sheet of metal is first bent upon itself at the upper and lower edges of the body or body plate 3, and the upper and lower extremities of the sheet are then carried rearwardly below and above the lower and upper edges of the body plate. It will also be observed that the arms 6, as welll as the flanges 4 and 5, correspond in length to the body plate 3, and that normally the said arms 6 are rearwardly converged.
Flgure 1 is a front .elevation of my novel.
ent, is:v
By virtue of this latter provision it will be observed that when the device is to be placed upon the edge of a shelf or similar support, it is necessary to spring the arms 6 outwardly into parallel relation. This will place the arms under tension and, consequently, when released, they will strongly clamp the opposite sides of the shelfv and thereby preclude casual displacement of the device. .When, however, it is desired to remove the device from Aa shelf, the same may be expeditiouslyand easily accomplished by drawing the device cti'I the shelf, whereupon the arms 6 will resume their normal rearwardly converged state.
` Inasmuch as the ends of the flanges 4 and 5 are open, it will be manifest that a card or label may be moved with facility into or out of either end of the holder, and this without` liability of the card or'label being displaced when the device is in use.
The important features of my novel device considered as a specific article of manufacture reside in the fact that .it may be quickly and easily formedof a single rectangular v.piece `of tin or other appropriate sheet metal, and in the fact thatfits formation does not entail the employment of expensive machinery and does not involve the exercise of lmore than ordinary care.; Manifestly, the device may be cheaply'producedg'either by hand f or l'with' theassistance of al suitable v`Having! described Vmy. -invention, what I Aclaiml and desire to securefbyL'etters Pat- As a newarticle of'nianufacture, a device for holding' a card 'or a label in opposed l.relation toa'shelf edge,.formed oflaA single.
rectangular sheet ofresilient material and comprising a body plate,'lower and upperv flanges spaced in front of and-'parallel to the face of the body plate andV open at their ends; saidllanges being formed vby loops extending from the lower and upper edges of the body plate, and resilient arms joined to and reaching` rearwardly from the outer layers of the flanges and disposed below and .above the said loops and lbraced by the same, and normally converged toward theirV rear ends.
' In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
JOHN PH. KERN.
