Be it known that I, GABRIEL BLUM, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of the city of Philadelphia, 'county .ofPhiladelphia, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the 4following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates .to Apockets in ,garments and is especially adapted for employment in mens or '-boystrousers, althoughit ygarments such as ladies skirts or the like.

The Jprincipal object ,of my invention is to provide `in a garment a safety pocket .for carrying valuables or the like, which, when closed, will :be inconspicuou's and in Afact very largely concealed, and ito which access may lbe gained only by uniastening or completely removing the -fastening means .enr ployed to hold the closure of the closed position. Afurther object'of-myinvention is to provide a safety ypocket arranged in conjunction with a ypocket otordi- `nary form in ysuch manner that a lthiei yor piclpoclret will naturally insert his hand-in the ordinary pocketwhichwill generally y:be employed jfor carrying .articles of small value without l"being aware vofthe `presence ofthe safety pocket adjacent thereto and in Vwhich the vmore valuable articles -Of the wearerare deposited. The material of which the garment is made is preferably extended downwardly from the waist band to join the body 11 of the pocket 10, which. will ordinarily be formed of a different kind of material, approximately at the line 20 so that when the flap is turned down as shown in Fig. 1 the material forming will not be visible. For the purpose of se curing the flap or closure 12 and thus closing the pocket when desired, the flap is preff erably provided with a plurality of buttonholes 22 adjacent its upper edge coperaf tive with corresponding buttons 23 positioned adjacentthe waistband of the garment. It will be understood that, if preferred, any other convenient means for retaining` the flap in'closed position may be employed for example, snap or glove fasteners or the like, and that While buty two 'buttons are shown inthe drawing, any d esired number thereof, or of, the other fastening means, may be utilized.

In Fig. 2 the flap o r closure 12 of the pocket is illustrated in closed position, that is, in the position in which it will normally be worn, and for the sake of clearness the opening 9, through which entrance is gained to the pocket 7, is shown as pulled or gaped open rather more than it would ordinarily bewhen the garment is worn; that is, the parte are yshown inoapproximately the position which they `would assume when the hand is 'being introduced into the pocket 7,

It will be notedthat' the stitching 18 at the lower extremity of fiap 12 is positioned less than half way from the upper end of the opening 9 to the lower end thereof, so that with the ilap 12 in closed position it is impossible to introduce the hand into the safety pocket adjacent the edge of the opening 9, or adjacent the upper edge of the flap on account of the buttons 23 or other fact that the body fastening means, and, further, that the flap lies very closely to the edge ofthe opening 9 s0`that the lingers will naturally slip into said opening leading to the pocket 7 and not into the very small, substantially closed and practically concealed opening leading to the pocket 10. Access, however, may, when desired, be 'readily gained to the pocket 10 by unbuttoning the flap as shown 1, after 'which the hand may be It will be observed that by reason of the 11 of the safety pocket is interposed between the body of the ordinary pocket 7 and the material of which the garment is made, it is impossible to tell from the body, of the pocket observation of the exterior of the garment that the contents of the safety pocket are disposed vvin a receptacle separate from but adjacent to the body of the ordinary pocket so that, for example, if a roll of bills be cai ried in the safety pocket and a bunch of 4keys or other relatively non-valuable articles in the ordinary pocket the bulge produced thereby on the exterior of the garment would lead a thief to the conclusion that all of the articles which tended to pr0. duce it were disposed in the pocket V'' and an attempt to abstract these articleswould therefore be direc-ted to this pocket alone. Such attempt, however, if successful, would result only in the abstraction of the rela# tively non-valuable articles contained in the 'ordinary pocket. It will be further noted that in ordinary use, that is, when articles are placed in or removed from the ordinary pocket 7 the material formino' the safety .o pocket moves unitarily with and in no way interferes with the enfiploymentl or operation of the former, and that, on the other hand, articles may be readily removed from or introduced into the safety pocket after the liap is unfastened without disturbing the contents of the ordinary pocket, the two pockets being in effect separate bul so combined in the garment as to form Va single unitarily operative deviceso constructed as to present, 'especially when worn with a vest, the lower part of 'which is operative to cover vthe buttonsv or other fastening means of the'fiap, the appearance of an ordinary` pocket whilefproviding a readily accessible and yet securely closed receptacle for articles of value.

It -will beunderstood that while I have illustrated the invention one side cfa pair of trousers, in' practice it is customary to apply it to both sides thereof, and furthermore, that it is equally adapted for employment in forms of garments other than mensV trousers. I therefore do not desire or intend to limit myself solely to its use therein or to the specific details of constructionV and arrangement Vofthe various parts as herein illustrated and'described, as Vsuitable changes andmodiications may `be made in such details without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined inthe appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what the 4garment is as applied only to 2. In a garment, the combination of a plurality of pockets having independent openings, said'openings being disposed in relative angular relation, a closure for one of said openings comprising a flap extending from adjacent the edge of the other of said openings, and fastening means for said closure.

In a garment, the combination with a pocket having an opening adjacent a side seam of the garment and extending substantially in alinement therewith, of another pocket disposed between said rst mentioned pocket and the material whereof the garment is made and having an opening angularly disposed with respect to said iirst mentioned opening, a iiap for said last mentioned poclet formed of said material, one edge of said flap when in closed position lying adjacent the edge of the opening to said vlirst mentioned pocket and means adjacent the otheredge of said flap to maintain said iiap in closed position.

4^; In a garment, the combination of a `plurality of pockets, one of said pockets having a substantially longitudinally extending opening and the other of said pockets being disposed'between said first mentioned pocket and the material forming said garment and having an openingV extending in angular' relation with said first mentioned opening, a closure, and means to hold the same in position to close one of said openings and in operatively movable relation with one of the sides of the other of said openings.

5, In a garment, the combination of a pair of pockets, one of said pockets having a vertically extending opening, and the other of said pockets having an opening in angn lar relation therewith, a iiap secured adjacent the edge of said vertical opening and adjacent the waist band of said garment, and means adjacent said waist band for securing said iap in closed position, said flap when in Vsach closed position being adapted to lie adjacent to and move with a side of said vertically extending opening when said side is displaced to give access to said first mentioned pocket.

6., ln a garment, the combination of a pair of pockets, one of said pockets having a substantially longitudinally extending opening and the other of said pockets being disposed between said iirst mentioned pocket and the material of which the garment is made and having an opening angularly disposed with respect to said first mentioned opening, a closure for said angnlarly disposed opening and means operative to retain said closure in position to close said opening and in nnitarily movable relation with the material forming a side of said iirst mentioned pocket.
