Description

R. w. JONES.
TOY.
APPLICATION FILED Aue.20, 1919.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
fiwm 077.5 r W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RALPH W. JONES, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 18, 1919,
Application filed August 20, 1919. Serial No. 318,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH W; JoNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in toys and comprises a musical hoop so constructed that as the hoop is revolved a series of bells are successively struck to emit a musical sound.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a hoop so constructed that as the same is revolving, it will emit a musical sound.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the sameconsists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which -will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made'to the precise structural details. therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the 'scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side view of a hoop constructed according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view..
In carrying out the aim of my invention, I elmploy a 'hoop 5, having the spoke -receiv ing nipples 6 located insets of two, and arranged to receive the spokes .7, the inner ends of which are held in suitable apertures within the flanges 8 of the tubular axle 9, as shown.
Revolubly held on this axle are the eyes 10 forming the innerends of the striker arms 11, the outer ends of which are held in the striker head 12, these arms'being held in divergent spaced relation, as shown in Fig. 2.
Fixed to the inner periphery of the hoop 5 are the radially inwardly extending stems -13 to each of which is fixed-a bell 14, and held adjacent to each bell is a spring 15 fixed in a base 16 these springs each having a clapper head 4 intermediate of their ends, as shown. In order to hold the eyes 10 in spaced relation I provide the brace rod 8- From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
I have entered into a somewhat detailed description of the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a definite understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as restricting myself to the exact construction shown and described, as various changes or modifications may be made in the form, size, and minor details of construction without departing from the principles or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination, a tubular axle, having an apertured flange at each end, a' hoop,
spokes extending from said hoop and having their ends fastened into said apertures, a plurality of bells secured to the inner periphery of said hoop, a radially extending spring located adjacent to each of said bells, each of said springs having a clapper head fixed intermediate of its ends, and apendant striker comprising two arms each ending in an apertured disk revolubly engaging said hub at one end and fixed to a striker head at the other end, whereby when said 1 hoop is rotated, said head successively engages said springs, as and for the purpose set forth. a
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
RALPH W. JONES.
