TOY WHISTLE;

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, JAMES C. T YLOR, a

citizen of the United States,-residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State. of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Whistles; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of the invention is to provide a novel and attractive toy whistle adapted for example for use in celebrations, carnivals and the like wherein there is embodied means which can be produced at a relatively small cost for giving a, sound resembling sirens; and with this object in -view the-invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred-embodiment is shown in the acomp'anying drawing, wherein: I 7' Figure 1 is a side view of the toy. Fig. 2 is an end view. I Fig. .3 is a transverse section. Fig.4 is a longitudinal section.

The device consists of a plurality ,of sounding tubes 10,. three being represented in the drawing, grouped: in close relation and constructed of sheet material which may be metallic as of tin or the like, or

may be of celluloid or cardboard or any equivalentthereof, closed at their outer end as shown at 11 and provided at their inner ends with heads 12 provided with openings 13 communicating respectivelyv with the interiors of the tubes, and amouth piece or tube 14, fixed to the heads of said sounding tubes in substantially concentric relation with the series of openings in the head and provided close to the plane of the heads with narrow outlet slits'l5 directed respectively:

toward said openings 13.

When the lips of the operator have been placed to the mouth piece or tube and a blast of air is directed through the same, the thin streams of air escaping vfrom the mouth piece and directed overthe heads to impinge upon the edges of the openings 13 cause vibrations of the columns of air respectively in the sounding tubes and produce sounds which are determined by the lengths of the Specification of Letters Patent; 1 'Patent'ediJuly 5', 1-921, Application filed August 25, 1920. Serial No.;1405,s 2 5.

tubes are made of diiferentlengths as indi- 'cated so that a plurality of tones, or sounds at different pitches, and of any desired rela tive pitches may be produced simultaneously as in sirens and like composition-horns or instruments. I Having thus describedthe invention,what

columns of air. Preferably the sounding 1. Atoy whistle consisting of a plurality of sounding tubes provided at oneend with 1 heads arranged in flush relation and having i a series of openings communicating respectively with the interiors'of the tubes, and an mouth piece or tube arranged in substan tially concentric relation withthe series of openings'and provided adjacent to thecplane V of said head with outlet slits for directing currents of air transversely with relationto the openings therein.

' '2. A toy whistle consistingof a plurality V of sounding tubes provided atone endwith heads arranged in' fiush' relation andhaving a-serles ofopenlngs communicating respec tively w1th the lnterlors ofthe tubesyand 'a-mouthfpiece or tube arranged; in "substantially concentric relation with thes'eries of openings andprovided' adjacent to the plane of said head withoutlet slits-forfdirecting currents of air transversely with relation to' the openings therein, said sounding tubes being ofdifferent lengths.

3. "A toy whistle consisting of plurality of sounding. tubes providedat'o'ne end with heads arranged in'flush relation and'having a serles of openings communicating respec}, tively w1th the lnterlors of the" tubes, and

a mouth piece or tube arranged in substan-' tially concentric relation with the series'of openings and provided adjacent to the plane of said head with outlet slits for directing V currents of air transversely with relationto v the openings therein, said sounding tubes being of diiferentlengths, and. being closed at the ends opposite to'said head.

In testimony whereof afliX 7 my. signature in presence of two witnesses; I v

JAMES TAYLOR.
