EDWARD A. GRAVES, OF J AMESIOWN, NEW YORK.
PANTS AND SHIRT GRIP.
Application filed January 28, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. GRAvns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pants and Shirt Grips, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to garment supporting means and more particularly to a clip for preventing the upward creeping of the shirt and the downward slipping of the trousers.
The invention obviates the use of susponders and the necessity for providing buttons upon the waist band of pants since the clip is of such construction as to positively engage the waist band of trousers and the skirt portion of a shirt with the result that the trousers are supported by the shirt and in turn prevent the upward creeping of the shirt by reason of the intermediate connection resulting from the use of the clip which engages both the shirt and the trousers.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
In the drawing hereto attached,
Figure 1 is a front view of a clip embodying the invention showing the same applied.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the shirt omitted and illustrating the clip as seen from the inner side of the waist band.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4c is a detail showing the clip as it appears when applied to the shirt.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the cli orresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The clip is of oblong form and is preferably constructed of a sheet metal blank and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Serial No. 273,516.
comprises a body portion 1. One end of the clip has an opening therein of approximately key-hole shape, such opening comprising an enlarged portion 2- and a narrow portion 3. The opposite end of the clip is bent upon itself to provide a hook, the bill portion 4 of which flares slightly to facilitate the engagement of the hook with the upper edge of the waist band of pants or trousers. The butt portion of the hook is contracted, as indicated at 5 so as to bite the edge portion of the waist band and pre vent possible displacement of the clip after the same has been properly engaged with the waist band.
In practice the skirt portion of a shirt 6 is engaged with the lower end of the clip by gathering a portion of the shirt and passing it through the opening 2 and then drawing it into the narrow or contracted portion 3 of the opening. The hooked end of the clip is now engaged over the waist band 7 of the trousers or pants and is drawn downward to cause the upper edge of the waist band to be firmly gripped between the contracted portion 5 of the hook. It will be understood that the clip forms positive connecting means between the shirt and pants, thereby preventing the upward creeping of the shirt and the downward displacement of the pants, hence the necessity for providing suspenders or attaching buttons to the waist band of pants or trousers is wholly obviated.
The foregoing description and the draw ings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A pants and shirt grip, comprising an elongated body having a key-hole shaped opening at one end and a hook at its opposite end consisting of a portion of the body folded upon itself, said hook einbody- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ing a butt, shank and bill and having its in presence of two Witnesses. bill 'flared and both the bill and shank EDWARD A. GRAVES. drawn in adjacent the butt to form pro- Witnesses:
5 nouneed gripping portions and a contracted MARY M. Woons,
opening to the butt. LAWRENCE U. HALLECK.
