GARMENT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 35, l9l5.
Application filed October 5, 1914.. Serial No. 865,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRTLE M. PARSNOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment fasteners of the general class known as hook and eye fasteners, and my object is to produce an effieient fastener comprising a hook member and an eye member each provided with integral prongs susceptible of being forced through the fabric and to ultimately lie substantially parallel with and clamp the fabric against the body portion to retain the member reliably in the position it is necessary it should occupy to properly perform its function.
Another object is to produce a fastener of simple and cheap construction.
'To these ends the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of the hook memberof the fastener in blank, the View being taken from above- Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the completed hook member, as viewed from below, prior to its attachment to a garment or the like. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical longitudinal sections of the hook member on the line III-IV of Fig. 5, Fig. 3, showing the member in an initial stage of its attachment to the garment. Fig. 5, is a perspective View on a reduced scale, of the hook member as illustrated by Fig. 4. Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the eye member in the blank.
Each member of the fastener is preferably made of fairly stiff thin ductile metal or its equivalent which will not corrode or otherwise discolor or stain the garment to which it is attached should the garment become damp through washing or otherwise.
Referring to the hook member, 1 indicates the body portion and projecting centrally from the front edge of the same is a tongue adapted to be bent back at what may be termed the outer side of the body portion to form a fastening element or hook 2. At opposite sides of and spaced from the tongue and also projecting from the front edge of the body portion is a pair of parallel pins or prongs 3 of substantially twice the length of the hook and projecting from the same edge of the body portion between the tongue and the pins or prongs 3 are pins or prongs 4, the same being preferably of approximately the same length as the hook.
In longitudinal alinement with the hook and bowed outwardly toward the same is a hump 5 formed on the body portion and adapted to cooperate with the hook in securely retaining in engagement therewith an eye of any suitable character but preferably of a type hereinafter described.
For convenience in effecting the engagement of the hook with the eye, the terminal of the hook is bent outwardly as at 6, so that in conjunction with the body portion 1, it shall form a flaring mouth as appears most clearly by reference to Figs. 3 and-4t, and the terminals of the pins or prongs 3 and 4 are bent or curved as at 7 and 8 respectively so that they may lie more flatly or snugly against the doubled portions 9 and 10 respectively produced by bending said pins or prongs inwardly of the body portion, Fig. 4, illustrating most clearly how the terminals of the arms 3 fit snugly against the rounded or doubled portions 9. With this arrangement there is no danger of the terminals of the pins or prongs projecting outwardly so as to scratch or cut the fingers of the person fastening the garment or the parts of the latter being accidentally torn by engagement with the terminals of said prongs or pins.
In Fig. 6, which illustrates the eye member of the fastener, the body portion 1 is of I-shape, the cross piece or stem of the lE-shaped body portion being bowed out- 'wardly and adapted for engagement by the hook 2. For convenience of illustration the width of the eye member is materially exaggerated, it being of course understood that it should be wide enoughto provide an eye with which the hook can be readily engaged.
To secure the hook member in operative position it is preferred that the garment 11 shall be formed with a hem 12, and to completely hide the member at the inner side of the hem, the pins or prongs 3 are forced through the inner portion of the hem as shown in Fig. 3, the device being pressed in the direction indicated by the arrow in said figure, to cause the other pins or prongs 4 to also pass through the inner portion of the hem, the adjustment continuing until the hem at the point first penetrated comes into engagement with the doubled portions 9 and 10, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. a. In effecting this adjustment about half the length of the long pins or prongs has emerged from the hem and the impaled portion of the hem lies against the under side of the'body portion in the position which it retains throughout its period of service, and to retain thehook in such position the said projecting portions of the pins or prongs 3 are bentas at 12, around the rear edge of the body portion and then down upon the outer side of the same, it being preferred that the proportion shall be such that the curved ends 7 shall fit snugly around the bent portions 9 as hereinbefore explained and as shown clearly in Fig. 4E. The eye member is secured in position in a similar manner, that is to say the pins or prongs 3 and corresponding to the pins or prongs 3 and 1 respectively, are doubled until they lie at the inner side of the body portion and after said arms have been passed through the mner portion of the hem, the longer arms are bent around the rear edges of the oody portion and down upon the outer sides of the same. It will be readily seen that ,a fastener of the character described can be easily and quickly secured. in position and that by reason of the doubled portions 9 and 10 and the doubled portions 12, the members are held flatly to the goods and incapable of longitudinal slippage.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a garment fastener embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable, and I wish it to be understood that I reserve the right to make all changes falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a garment fastener, a body portion and a pair of substantially parallel pins proiecting from the front edge of the body portion and doubled back at the inner side of the body portion and'of greater length than the latterso as to be capable of rebending around the rear edge of the body portion and against the outer side of the latter, the
body portion being provided at its outer side with a rearwardly opening hook lying in a plane approximately parallel to the planes of said pins and at one side thereof.
2. In a garment fastener, a body portion and a pair of substantially parallel pins projecting from the front edge of the body portion and doubled back at the inner side of the body portion and of greater length than the latter so as to be capable of rebending around the rear edge of the body portion and against the outer side of the latter, the body portion being provided at its outer side with a rearwardly opening hook lying in a plane approximately parallel the planes of said pins and, at one end, the body portion also having a hump at its outer side to assist in retaining an object in engagement with the hook.
3. In a garment fastener, a body portion, a rearwardly opening hook disposed at the outer side of the body portion and two pairs of pins lying at the opposite side of the body portion from the hook and extending rearwardly with respect thereto, the body portion having a hump at its outer side within the hook.
4-. In a garment fastener, a body portion, a reaiwvardly opening hook disposed at the outer side of the body portion and two pairs of pins of unequal length disposed at the opposite side of the body portion from the hook, the longer pair of pins being of greater length than the body portion.
5. A garment fastener, comprising a body portion of substantially rectangular form provided at one of its ends with two pairs of substantially parallel pins, one pair of said pins being of length to be doubled back to underlie the body portion and the other pair of sufficient length to be also doubled back under the body portion and to be rebent or doubled outwardly around the rear end of the body portion and downwardly toward the outer face of the latter; said body portion being also provided with a fastening element at its outer side.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
