TALKING-MACHINE. CABINET.
To all whom it may concern:
zen'of the United States, and a resident of the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a cer tain new and useful Improvement in Talking-Machine Cabinets, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to talking mach ne cabinets, and more particularly to devices for securing the covers of such devices 1n the open position.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby, when the cover is'raised, it will be securely ratained in such position, and by which the cover may be moved-to its closed position by the use of one hand only.
A further object is to provide means whereby the cover may be locked in open position automatically, and to prevent uhdue strains on the securing'meanswhen the cover is being opened. I
These and further objects. will more fully appear in the'following specification and ac-- companyinv drawings considered together or separately.
I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by the same reference characters in all of the figures, and in which,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a talking machine cabinet provided with my improvement, the cover being shown in the open position in full lines and closed in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1 the supporting link beingshown in elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and i Fig. 4 is a detail view of a modified form of supporting link.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a cabinet 1 having a motor board 2, to which a motor (not shown) is secured. A top or cover 3 is hinged to the cabinet 1 above the motor board, and preferably at the back of the cabinet.
Secured to the inside of one side of the cover, and in proximity to the top thereof, is a bracket 4 provided with a depending lug 5 to which is pivoted a link 6. The link is adapted to hang vertically when the cover is closed, and is so shaped or bent as to follow the lines of and lie in close relation to Specification of Letters Patent. the side of the-cabinet and cover. The moh tor board is recessed or notched at 7 adjacent to the Wall-of the'cabinet for the passageof the link, and a metallic lining or keeper 8 is disposed within the recess or notch. A wear plate 9'is secured to the sideofthe cabinet in'proximity to the keeper, and the ness of the motor board. The combined width of the link and the apex of the bowed spring is slightly greater than the passage in the motor board, sothat the spring has to be compressed to effect its passage through the opening in themotor board; 'Theoperation is as follows:
lVith the cover in the closed position as shown in dotted lines in Fig.1, the front, 7 i
that part opposite the hinges, of the cover is grasped by the hand, and the cover is' raised and the link and its attached spring drawn through the passage in the motor board and the spring compressed until it reaches the upper side of the notch. When the cover reaches its wide open position, the buffer will engage the bottom of the motor board, and the movement will be arrested and the jar cushioned by the resiliency of the buffer. The spring will remain in frictional engagement with the keeper as it passes through the notch and press the link against the wear plate, and such frictional engagement will support the cover in open position. When the cover has reached the limit of its open position, the lower curved end of the spring in its expanded condition will engage the upper edge of the notch and support the cover in open position.
It will not be necessary for the operator toexercise care as to the extent to which he raises the cover, but the cover may be raised until it will travel no farther. The elastic buffer willprevent injury to the parts, and there will be no danger of the fastenings of the fitting 4: being pulled out.
When it is desired to close the cabinet, the
operator will grasp the front of the cover with one hand, and by exerting pressure enough t'ocornpress the spring 10, the cover may be closed. There are no locks to unfasten or to get out of order.
If desired, the link, as illustratedin Fig. 4, may be provided with a plurality springs at intervals in the length of-the link to provide for locking thefiover in any one pf several positions.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus. shown is merely illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out in other ways.
Having now described myinvention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
l. A cabinet or otherreceptacle, a hinged cover therefor, a .keeper on said cabinet, a
link pivoted to said cover adapted to pass through said keeper, and a bowed spring fiXed-toandcarried bysaid link and adapted to be drawn through from the under side ofand engaged by the keeper and be compressed thereby, when the cover is raised, and
to expand. asit emerges from andengage the upper sideof the keeper, to thereby support the cover in open position.
2. A cabinet or other receptacle, a hinged cover therefor, a keeper on said cabinet, a link pivoted to said cover adapted to pass through said keeper, a bowed spring fixed to and carried by said link and adapted to be d'rawn'through from the under side of and engaged by the keeper and be compressed thereby, when the cover is raised, and to expand as it emerges from and engage the upper side of the keeper, to thereby support the cover in open position, and a resilient bufieron, the lower endgof said link toliinit and cushion the upward movement of the cover and link.
3. A cabinet or other receptacle, a hinged cover therBfQr, a keeper on said cabinet, a link pivoted to said cover adapted to pass through said keeper, and a series of S110- cessive bowed springs fixed to and carried by said link and adapted to be drawn through from the under side ofand successively engaged by the keeper and be compressed thereby, when the cover is raised, and to expand when emerging from and engage the upper side of the keeper, to thereby support the cover indifferent open positions.
